I know there are a few on here who've been following along with
the
Eddie Bertrand "gear site" so I thought I'd give you a little
update. First I've gotten a new computer, which doesn't have
frontpage so updating any of my websites is a challenge right now.
Anyway...
I got a really interesting email this morning from someone who says
they were around at that time a few of the pictures were taken that
I have on the site. He says the reverb tank in the Hollywood Bowl
picture was his and that Rob Edwards was using "his" Bandmaster.
Also the Beach Boys followed and used the same amps.
We had a discussion awhile back about Eddie's "blue Jag" in that
picture being his white guitar touched up. He did verify the guitar
being the white one, however, he said Rob Edwards was often sanding
and refinishing his own guitars and thought Eddie may have done the
same.
He says Eddie had surgury at some point and Larry Carlton played the
lead guitar for awhile, then he went into Larry's guitars. He did
say that he thought everyone bought matching Strats so it is
possible that Eddie had more than just the one Stratocaster.
He then said "Bob Knight or Doug Hensen would know, or ask Eddie if
you can get him to call back."
So there may be a chance I can contact Eddie afterall.

Who was this mystery man? It sounds like a cool lead on some
interesting info. I spent part of the long weekend
learning "Scratch". Have you seen the '86 SouthBay reunion tape?
An interesting side note to this is a few years ago I sold a
Reissue reverb tank on e-bay, and the guy that bought it sent me a
picture of his original 61 showman that the tank was going to be
used with. I asked if he played surf, and he said he was in a band
in the 60's. he said it was one of the incarnations of The Surfmen,
and he played bass with them for a very short while. He got drafted
soon afterwards. I don't remember his name.
after all that, maybe it wasn't so interesting after all.....

Chris,
His name is Jim Schmitz. How did Scratch go? I remember having the
most trouble picking out his leads during the stop times. Still,
unless I'm playing along with it I don't do it all note for note.
What kind of guitar were you using?
That woulda been something if the guy who bought your tank was Ron
Griffith, but the guy you met was probably one of his replacements.
I think the Lively Ones started up pretty early in Surfmen history.

Scratch is coming along fine. I'm working on both the rythym and
the lead. I like doing both, it helps me figure out why the lead
plays where it does. Sometimes I think the rythym players really
drive these surf classics. I really enjoy playing rythym! I think
Rob Edwards and John Anderson are some of the unsung heros of the
first wave. I love the driving rythym, and I think its one of the
tougher parts to play right. lead guitar gets the glory, rythym
gets no respect!
I cheated and watched Eddie play it on the 86 Reunion show
tape. I usually play the AV jag, but lately i've been playing a
Reissue Strat because it was getting neglected.
So, did this Jim play with any bands back then? Does he stay in
touch with any other first wave surf guys?

I didn't badger the guy about any details other than " that must
have been cool" so who knows how long he played with 'em. His
Showman sure was cool looking though, all original, blonde with
oxblood, beautiful !
Do the Reluctant Aquanauts have a disc ready for sale? Can I
purchase one?

Yes, the rhythm guitar is such a crutial part, we've been trying to
break a 4th guy into the band, but he's still having difficulty
playing some of those parts. Try not missing any of the upbeats
on "Everybody Up." I'll admit, my rhythm skills are rather poor
haha. I do like that rhythm part in Scratch that either Rob or John
are doing.
I'm almost positive Eddie played Scratch on his Jag, not only the
tone, but it sounds like heavy strings and he's really bending em,
which would lead me to believe it's the "24 scale.

I asked him, and I'm still waiting for a reply.

Our disc is done, we just need to make up a cover for it, press em'
and package em'. If you want, I can add you to a little list I have
of people I'm contacting when it's done. The first few we get out
will probably be nicely packaged CDRs.
