Surf: New vs Old

pwrose1 - 02 Jan 2005 22:58:50

In the spirit of seeking new and unusual
strains of music, I was wondering if any
of our intrepid musicians might consider
putting the surf twang onto a challenging
little number that was put out by Al DiMeola
on the Elegant Gypsy album....
"Race with the Devil on Spanish Highway".
Has anybody already done this?
Any takers?
Les, are you listening? :>)
Oh, I just listened to it again. Maybe it's
too many notes to be "Surfed". ;^P

Heck, I'd love to hear 'Fantasia Suite' from "Friday Night in San
Francisco" (Al DiMeola, Paco De Lucia, and John McLaughlin) done up
surf style. Just the 2nd half from about 3:40 on, LOL. Get an
intense 3 way sparring contest going.

Bill,
Happy New Year.
I think I've already covered this idea for "surf." Between "Pintor" and
my classical excursions, I think I've played enough notes already :-)
Cheers,
Les

Not quite the same, but my band the Madeira covers Paco De
Lucia's "Almoraima". He's still one of my favorite guitarists. I
used to like Al DiMeola, but haven't listened to him in many years
now. John McLaughlin always played way too many notes and not enough
melodies...
Incidentally, here's a bit of trivia: in 1961 the Shadows original
drummer Tony Meehan left the band, to be followed next year by the
original bass player Jet Harris. Jet released a couple of singles on
his own, and then hooked up with Tony for a couple of singles
together, Diamonds and Scarlett O'Hara being the notable ones. The
songs were big hits, and the two of them started touring, backed by a
band of mostly young jazz-influenced players, including John Paul
Jones on bass (later from Led Zeppelin) and, yes, John McLaughlin on
guitar! In fact, there's a funny story by another guitarist in the
band who saw McLaughlin crying his eyes out one day while on tour
with either Jet and Tony or just Tony. He asked him what was the
matter, and McLaughlin told him that he's terribly depressed playing
this insipid music (Shadows-style instros), and that he feels like
he's getting nowhere in his career! Ain't that funny??

Speaking of 'too many notes', how about a surf version of Steve
Morse's "Tumeni Notes", from 'High Tension Wires'?
That's just some sick picking, I think even Al DiMeola might have a
struggle with that one!

More, Les! More!
You can never play too many notes.
(Just like you can never put too
much water into a nuclear reactor)
Les is More. :>D
Aside: My wife thinks "Jackson"
(Johnny & June Carter Cash)
done up a la surf might be a hoot.

Bill,
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Meanwhile, my newest instro CD is gonna be out by the end of this
month. It's called "While My Guitar Only Plays." Instros of all Beatles
tunes. I think you'll quite enjoy this one.
Cheers,
Les
