March is looking like a historic month in the history of modern surf
music...so let's start talking about Richard's question (below).
Of course, I'd like to see all of those shows given enough time and
money. I would really like to see Ran's new band in San Diego. And I'd
like to do a repeat of my last vacation last April and see the
Brookdale and Sacramento shows too.
I think so far that March 5th show in Hermosa Beach looks like a
target date to center activities around (Slacktone/Surf
Coasters/Nebulas). But that's just coming from me, who has never seen
Slacktone, and really wants too... :)
Unfortunately California is a big state, so you may not want to be
driving around all over your entire trip. It can wear on you.
I think a lot of people are waiting to see what other dates fill in.
For example, The Nebulas play March 5th but not again (at least
officially) until March 11th.
I am also curious, are other bands like The Hypnotic IV, The
Infrareds, and possibly Laika & The Cosmonauts going to be around as
well? I realize I may be asking too much here... :^)
I was in the Hermosa Beach area just once about 2 years ago on a
business trip, and needless to say, this hayseed from Iowa will also
need some advice on places to stay, etc.
So yes, as Chris suggested, I think a massive SG101 field trip is in
order, and let's start the discussions going on this....
Can we see a show of hands on who is thinking about going?
Thanks,
BN
PS:
I just also want to state to anyone who is on the fence about this
that my wife and I did something similiar last April during the 1st
Surf Coasters US tour, and we had a total blast. Not only were the
bands awesome, but meeting fellow fans/list members like Trode, Tom
Hinders, the legendary Jeff "Bigtikidude", (the other non-list guy)
Marty, Ran, Ferenc, Mel Waldorf, etc, etc. was a truly memorable
experience. Lots of fun and great music all around!

Happy New Year to you Brian.
Just to give everybody a heads-up. It looks like were playing (The Detonators)
at Suzy's in Hermosa Bch. on March 4th, (The night before Slacktone, etc.), with
The Insect Surfers. and I think Kelp.
We figured we'd sneak in that night for people who were from out of town, etc.
I'm taking the Detonator motorhome and staying for the whole week-end. Needless
to say, it's gonna be a bash.
As far as places to stay in Hermosa, there's a Holiday Inn Express on P.C.H.
right across from The Pitcher House, and also a very cool place to stay is the
Sea Sprite Motel right on the beach just south of Hermosa pier and fairly
reasonable. 5 minutes from Suzy's.
Hope that helps.

Just want to add some what fors... California is big,
but doable. I realize that the people who came to
NorCal last year would probably prefer to see the
SoCal action this time around. But hey, don't forget
The Neptunes at Club Fred. Last year the show was a
near sell out (on a Wednesday night, and the Surf
Coasters sold almost all of their swag in one night
there... And how great is the Brookdaqle Lodge where
you can get an inexpensive room to crash land in.
Also, the NorWest part of the tour is looking awesome,
with a stop in Vancouver (only 1 hour from Seattle)
and a show at the EMP Museum.
Here is the word on some of the bands you mentioned
Brian-- Laika has cancelled their tour, including the
show with King of Hawaii. The Hypnotic IV are taking a
break, we will miss playing with them in Sacremento,
But I hope to keep their tradition of the evening
ending surf jam going.
Also, I want to apologize to all bands who offered to
help set up shows, or asked to open. I'm sorry I about
the limits we have at the clubs. I wish every stop was
a 10 band surf battle. I will be really sorry to miss
The Detonators/Insects show wile The Surf Coasters are
in San Diego. Anybody planning on going to Las Vegas?
I have never been there so I am looking forward to it.
So I wish a great 2005 (Chinese year of the Rooster*!)
to you all! I look forward to meeting SG101 list
members wherever- Belgium, Amsterdam, SoCal and the
Northwest.
Thanks,
Ferenc

I'm not going to miss the show with Slacktone and the Nebulas on Sat. March
5th. I would have gone to the Thursday night show, but I can't be traveling
so much, especially one day before opening for the Surf Coasters. NorCal is
out of our budget this year, but I'd try to go see as many Surf Coasters
gigs as possible.
Which brings me to my next issue.
The place we're playing in San Diego, The Whistle Stop, is not a place with
a history of Surf Music shows (unlike the other venues in the tour that have
had many surf shows in the past).
The first surf gig there was very successful, and we're hoping the
Infrareds/Slacktone show on Jan 28th will be successful, too.
The gig with the Surf Coasters on Friday March 4th has to be PACKED with
people that came to see them. Why? so we can make the venue owner confident
that there's a good crowd for Surf music in San Diego.
So, for those of you who are not sure about coming to see this gig, please
consider it as a contribution to strengthening the San Diego surf music
scene, which needs all the help it can get, regarding choice of venues open
for surf bands.
Of course, I'm not trying to step on the Detonators/Insects/Kelp toes here,
just bringing the information to everyone's attention. I'd hate the turnout
to the SD show to be low, causing the bar owner to not be open for future
surf gigs in the place.
Happy New Year,

Nah, I would'nt sweat it Ran. The Insects alone bring in their own little surf
following and we'll probablyj ust draw the locals, friends, and family. It
should'nt effect San Diego. Not to mention we'll be pumpin' the crowd for the
following night at Suzy's. I gotta hunch, both venues will be packed.

I'm either flying out for the 3/3-3/5 stretch in SoCal, or the 3/12-3/13
stretch in NoCal.
I'm leaning towards the southern trip to see Slacktone, but I sure
wouldn't mind seeing Pollo Del Mar again, so I'm still undecided.

I am going to try hard to make it to the March 3,4,5 shows. I'll
keep checking here to see how everyone is progressing with plans.
