Deke Dickerson/Untamed Youth

supertwangreverb - 28 Dec 2004 11:15:52

Any Untamed Youth fans aboard? I know they were probably more of
a "frat rock" band than surf but their version of The Hearse is one
of my favorites. Anyways, I've been doing some small work with
Jimmy Sutton who happens to play bass with Deke now. So I got a
little information on his gear.
He said he used his Jag on the first Youth album, Sammy's reissue
Jazzmaster on the 2nd, and his 335 on the later stuff. He had the
humbucking coils taken out of his 335 so each is only a single
coil. I guess that's how he got those great Fenderish tones from
it. He did say that the Jag that he's most associated with using in
the Youth wasn't to great of a guitar, the neck and body don't
match, and someone had medium jumbo frets installed on it.

Hey Bill,
I'm a HUGE UY and Deke fan. It's nice to know how he got those
sounds out of a 335...I've got one, and couldn't figure it out. The
instros are great, especially their version of "The Hearse". It's
my fave version of that tune.
The Ecco-fonic 45's have some great Deke instros on them too. I've
got a "Mother's Worry" b/w "Samoa" on Gas Records that is really
good. It would be great to have an all instro Deke release
featuring stuff from his back catalogue. I heard he was trying to
do an all instro album with Larry Collins (Collins Kids) one time,
but haven't heard anything about it in a while.

I too, am a Deke fan. I've seen him twice this year, and he was
really great both times. He played some Surf tunes both times I saw
him. He does a killer version of Diamond Head, where he does this
harmonic lead part behind the bridge.... Have you seen him with his
Hallmark Doubleneck with the bass VI neck? It's REALLY cool!
Jimmy Sutton was with Deke the second time, and he's great too.
He played guitar and sang a couple of songs, in addition to his bass
duties.
So, Bill, what are you doing with Jimmy?

Chris,
Too be honest I haven't seen Deke live yet, but now that he's
emailed me I'm going to his next show here in Chicago. I've been a
fan of the Untamed Youth for awhile, but don't know much of what
he's doing lately. My band the Reluctant Aquanauts hosted Jimmy
Sutton's Big C Jamboree, and I got to talking with him and we both
seem to like traditional sounding music, him even more so than me.
Anyway he's doing a small rockabilly side project and I may be
playing the guitar in it. Alot of the music is almost too old for
my tastes, but it sure is good stuff and alot of fun. Plus, I'm
honored to play with this guy, his talent is amazing.

Bill - you gotta go see Deke. If you don't come away jazzed to
learn some new songs, and some new styles of music, I'd be amazed.
His guitar playing is effortless, and he is a true front man in
every sense of the word. Deke makes the transition from his current
music (rockabilly and roots - country) and surf seamless. Both
styles have a lot in common, and I am often amazed that rockabilly
guys and surf guys don't share more common ground. It was the
progression of guitar driven music, after all.
From what I know about Jimmy Sutton, he is old school all the
way, but it would be great to learn from such an amazing talent.
It must feel good to be able to play with him. He may turn you into
a rockabilly cat!
