Updating my CIJ JAG

supertwangreverb - 27 Dec 2004 13:40:42

I asked for a set of AV Jaguar pickups, 1 meg audio pots, and
correct knobs for my CIJ Jag for Christmas. For cosmetic purposes I
also asked for a mint guard, and a mute(which has been mounted but
not fully installed). I had the most trouble getting the pots to
fit through the holes on the lower bout. The stock CIJ pots have
smaller shafts so I widened the holes with a small file. Also the
claws on the CIJ pickups differed from the AVs (see photo).
I'm sure this has been done here before, but I figured I'd give a
little review. First, I really like the stock CIJ pickups, and
wouldn't have replaced them had I not gotten the AVs for free. The
AVs seem to be a little more extreme than the CIJs. The bridge PU
seems to have more highs, and the neck pickup has more lows. I'm
able to get a rather convincing Margaya tone with just the bridge
on. With both PUs on I was able to get more of a Mr. Rebel Eddie
Bertrand tone. The AVs will stay in, but I'll be getting a 2nd CIJ
Jag to keep stock as a back up.
I tried the AVs PUs through the stock CIJ pots and there was a more
change in the tone after installed the new pots. I wonder how the
CIJs would have sounded through the 1meg pots.
As far as getting a classic surf tone I still believe the vintage
tank is more important than which pickups are in my guitar.
I'll do a little write up once I correctly install the mute, I've
got a vintage slug and spring on the way to me now.
Here's a photo of the guitar without the mint guard. I'm still
waiting for that to be shipped. I think it already looks better
with the mute, darker covers, and correct knobs.

1meg pots can be pretty bright when turned all the way
up, especially with the US vintage ri pickups, which
are also bright. I use 250K pots on my Jags except for
my stock '63. I think the stock Japanese pots are
1meg., but of quetionable quality. The japanese jag
pickups are pretty cool for all-out distortion sound.
Not classic rock at all. I used those for the Slim
Jims commercials a few years ago.

Yeah, the CIJs were 1meg. I replaced them with higher quality CTS
pots. You notice the difference in quality just by looking at them,
the CIJ ones were so small that it was laughable. I did notice that
when I'd roll off the volume on the stock CIJ pots loss of quality
in the tone would go along with the adjusting of the pots. There
would even be hissing when they were rolled back about 1/2 way. I
have heard from guys using 250k pots because they had trouble with
screeching sounds from the 1megs.
