Brian,
Sorry that last post didn't come thru. Comp glitch or something.
I'm not sure on the short scale, but I know they are out there.
Dan Valente in the Insect Surfers plays a Mustang Bass and he has
Shortscale Flatwounds.
I used to have Roundwound stings for 15 years. And Just assumed
that was the string to use for rock/surf. But I got a set of
D'Addario chromes flatwounds from Shawn of the Deoras, and will never
go back to Roundwounds again. It's like playing with buttah on the
strings compared to roundwounds.
As for the tapewounds , those are usually used on Fretless, or
acoustic basses.
See you in So. Cal. in the new year
Jeff(bigtikidude)
Hey Jeff,
Our bassist swears by Pyramid flats. He's had a set on one of his
basses for 4 years! The Pyramids are nickel, like they used to be
back in the day. Thomastiks are nickel as well but they are more
modern sounding and they don't thud as much as the Pyramids. When he
got his Jazz Bass and put on the Pyramids it sounded just like the
intro to Mr. Rebel.

I'm a Rotosound RS66 Round Wound user on a '51 Fender
Precision re-issue...and also Danelectro Bass 6
Roundwounds...for me, it's a better (brighter) bass sound
for loud, high-energy instrumental surf...
I do use Pyramid Flats on both the Danelectro Hodad Guitar
and on the Gretch Country Gentleman...but I do use GHS
Heavy Round Wounds on the "Strat"-like Retrotone
Surfmaster...Sort of Dick Dale or Dwayne Eddy "twang"
tone...
as you can see, I'm all over the place when it comes to
strings...

I have been using elixirs for some time now and am happy with them. they too are
expensive with retail around $70, however I can usually find a discount
somewhere on the net in the $30 range. Anyone else use these? would like to hear
any other opinion on them.

I guess 70 bucks every four years isn't too bad. However, Matt's the
most anal bass player you'll find.
But, I do hear where your comming from Phil. I think Pyramids sound
best on the guitar as well as bass, but I kept wearing the G strings
out fast and had to switch over to a stainless flat brand. $23.00
for strings every 3 months was outta my price range!
Looking foward to seeing you guys on the 7th!

Richard,
When I used to use Roundwound strings, and they became gunked up.
I would take them off, and boil them for about 5 minutes. All the
dirt would come off and collect in the center of the pan. Then just
ladle it out. After I would put them in a bowl of Ice water and put
them in the freezer for about 10 minutes. This helps to reallingn
the molecules in a tight uniform manner.
try it and let me know what you think.
