eminence/jbl speaker opinions needed

mono_tones_1 - 09 Dec 2004 03:51:00

okay, here's the deal:
- bought a cab which needs to be filled up ;-)
I came across to 15" -s:
- a 70's eminence in apareantly good shape, with an alu centre thingy
(don't know the english word) installed, looks properly done.
It's one of those with the giant square block on the back, I have
those in anoher amp (12") and I they sound pretty good.
- an "old" JBL D130F (if that's the number, the showman one in any
case, I'm on dial in now and don't want to get back to the other site)
the thing is, the eminence will be cheap ($50-ish max), the jbl is
advertized for 135 euro's, that would be around 180 bucks.
So, the question is, is that a fair price for the jbl? how
disappointed will I be with the eminence?
consider that I'm not a gearhead in the trad sense, just want good
clean tone. Also consider that I don't actually have 180 bucks, so
that sort of plays a role in the decission as well (yeah right, as if
we never spend "money we don't actually have" on equipment)
thanks, wannes

The price sounds OK if the JBL cone is still in good
shape. If you do end up using these two speakers
together, realize that the JBL is "reverse phase" from
the other brands of speakers. Theat means when the
other cone goes out, the JBL goes in. To get them in
phase, reverse the wires on the JBL {+ to the black
terminal, and - to the red terminal. Which the correct
phase will have the most bass responce.

I agree with Dave that the price sound ok.
Things to consider - you probably don't come across the JBLs very often in
Europe, so if you get one in the USA, you'll have to add something close to
a $100 for shipping (I know - I did that).
Also note that sometimes original cones are brittle, and when you start
playing them again after not being played for a while, they crack (happened
to me with both the original cones I got). So, depending on the condition of
the speaker and luck, I guess, you might be facing a recone. I'd rather have
my money spent on a JBL than an Eminence in that case.
Good luck,
Ran

Dave (or anyone of knowledge) - does this hold true for all JBL's? I have a
set of D130's from 1989ish in a '66 TR, not sure of the wiring at the moment
but it sounds great as is. What BAD could happen if I reverse the wires
anything?

I think what Dave was saying is that you don't want to have a mixed
set of speakers in the same cabinet. Any easy way to tell if your
speakers are in phase with each other is to put a 9 Volt battery
across each set of terminals and watch which way the cone moves.
You'll want all the speakers in the same cabinet to move the same way.
Make sure you consistently put the + terminal of the battery against
the + terminal of each speakers. If you get speakers out of phase in
the same cabinet then they will tend to cancel each other out. If you
have all JBL's then you are probably okay.

Yes, JBL speakers are reversed phase of other brands.
If you have a JBL from 1989, it's not a "D" series, it
would be a "E" series with a ceramic magnet. But,
these are also reverse phase. If you have a JBL and
another brand wired together with one polarity
reversed, it will just sound bad with little, or no
bass. It won't hurt anything other than the sound.

Having two different kinds of speakers in the same cab
is fine if you like the way it sounds. Also, I would
not use a 9 volt battery to check speaker polarity,
use a 1.5 volt.

Oops! What I meant by this was: if you're gonna mix speakers in a
cabinet, make sure they are in-phase.
