In response to R. Lowe, I never meant that having taken college
physics qualifies me to be an electronics master and that that will
suffice as adequate knowledge for amp repair. It was said to only
state that I am familiar with the basic principles of electronics. As
such I am attempting to extend my knowledge further into the amp
arena.
In response to ohsyrus, thanks for the advice and help but it
seems quite judgemental to slam someone asking technical info on a
site that is termed "101." I may not be a master of tube amps but I
am attempting to learn. Criticizing me for asking info. here is
absolutely pompous. It is really difficult admitting your own
personal ignorance to things in life and having people put you down
because they know more. My own two cents. :) CLC
I didn't realize I was criticizing you. If I have offended you in any
way I apologize. That wasn't my intention. My only point is that to
master DIY tube electronics takes considerable research skills. I
surmize it may also take thick skin--and the ability to hear clearly
warnings from those who have made the trip down the river before.
Best of luck to you.

Speaking of which...does anyone here know how to bias an amp (when you
retube it)? I'm getting tired of dropping 100.00 at my local tech shop every
time I come into a new piece of tube gear.
I own a multimeter, but not an oscilliscope. Can I do it?

Unfortunately, you need an oscilloscope. It should only cost $40 to
bias an amp.

Sorry, you don't necessarilly need an Oscilloscope, I was thinking of
tape head allignments! But i do know that unless you are a qualified
electrician, you shouldn't try this at home. The voltages involved
are lethal, what you don't know can kill you!

You know--its a tricky business even for pros. The last time I
watched a technician set the bias on my DR, the whole process took
him an hour, disassembly, measurement, reassembly, etc. The care with
which he attached the test leads to the tube socket pinouts would
have impressed a micro-surgeon. This is serious business. The guy has
been building boutique tweed amps for most of his life. If you are
into fixed bias amps this is one reason why I strongly recommend
Allen Amplification is that he has made it very easy for the non-pro
to bias his amps. I personally prefer cathode biased amps. I can swap
power tubes and forget about it.
Again, I can't emphasize this enough--you shouldn't learn tube amp
maintenance just by trial and error, or hands on experimentation. If
you do not know EXACTLY what you are doing, you will die, or blow up
your amp at the very least.
