Jazzmaster Bridge moving: the plot thickens

rio452001 - 28 Oct 2004 10:06:04

This is a follow-up to my earlier posts about how the bridge on both
my AVRI and CIJ JM's moved, so that it would be perfectly set up but
then the bridge would move down and I'd fret-out on higher note bends
etc.
So I brought them in to my guitar-guy, who set them up and applied
lock-tite.
got them home, and played the AVRI at rehearsal last night... within
an hour, I was fretting again... and then during one song, the guitar
actually became noticeably and progressively out of tune, as the
bridge sank rather quickly...
At that point, I gave up and picked up my Jaguar, which is what I'll
be playing at tomorrow nite's gig.
I haven't even tried the CIJ.
I'm now thinking I may have a more serious problem with the JM's, and
they're going to have to go back in the shop, unless someone can
think of another fix.
Any other thoughts from the members here?
Much obliged,
Rio

The plot does thicken.
I checked the allen screw, and they're still locked, so they haven't
turned. But somehow, it seems the bridge has moved (or the neck has
moved?)
I'm going to let it sit for a few days, and see if it changes more
or stays the same. And maybe I can clue into whatever it is that's
affecting it. But I suspect it'll be going back to the shop for a
closer inspection.
Anyway, there's no huge rush to get the JM's figured out, I've got a
decent Jag that's a fine alternative.

What kind of strings do you have on these guitars?

Those are fairly heavy for the Jazzmaster, you may be able to get
away with 12s or 13s on the Jag. But, I don't think that is your
problem. I'm too lazy to read back through the posts but it sounds
like the two height adjustment screws on your bridge keep comming
loose. I took the bridge off and took those two screws out and then
covered them with elmers glue and screwed them back into the
bridge. Hasn't slipped yet.

I think you said you have Mustang saddles, so it's gotta be those
bridge screws. Obviously you need something stronger than Loktite,
and it's probably available at the next gig, for free. Get your long
cord and spend Set 3 out among the dancers as they stagger around
with drinks in their hands--- preferably tropical concoctions with
rum and pineapple juice and all that sticky stuff. Shouldn't take
long to get several drinks dumped onto the JM. Wipe off everywhere
except the bridge and let it dry until next gig. Those screws will
never move again.
Which maybe prompts a future thread--- gigs where our gear got
unbelievably slimed, grimed, and trashed.... the ones where we spent
the next day/week/month trying to clean it all up...

I've been fortunate enough that my gear has never been damaged at a gig BUT I
have been blowed up real good at a gig. It was a backyard party in the late
'70's and an aspiring chemist friend of the band filled a Folgers can with some
kinda aluminum nitrate powder. The lead guitar was to step on a foot pedal that
would detonate the powder causing a great smoke bomb. Unfortunatley the night
air compressed the powder and, when the switch was hit, it exploded with a blast
that moved me a couple of feet and sent shrapnel into the ribs of the keyboard
player.
The chemist friend now works for Standard Oil.

I think I prefer Marty's scotch tape idea!
anyway, the locktite seems to have held, so it's gotta be something
else. I'm playing my Jag till I get it sorted out.

Did your repair guy degrease the parts he locktited. It won't work if
the parts are oily. miller
