JBL D120F

-=Brad Davis=- (tammibrad) - 19 Oct 2004 19:55:58

I'm sorta going for that 'mini Showman' thing with my Twin: So I thought I'd
take the low budget approach to acquiring some of these JBLs that everyone
seems to like....went on the dreaded 'bay, and found one with no cone, but
voice coil looks ok. As soon as it arrives off it goes to Ted Weber (fellow
Hoosier).
Anyone using / used any speakers (or their big brothers) like these that
have been reconed? Sound OK? Ted has a great rep...and I may get one of his
Cali's unless I scrounge another 'deal'. We'll see...my luck on the 'bay has
been mixed.

I've got a 15" JBLD130 that was reconed by Ted just a few months ago.
Sounds just like it's supposed to.
I'm a big fan of Ted's speakers. I've got some California 12's and
15's, which are kind of like JBL's, and also a 12F150. The
Californias are not made for your bedroom amp. They're loud and they
sound best when they're cranked. I also think they sound better in my
blackface showman than in my blonde showman. The Californias seem to
want a little more mid, and there's no mid control in the blondes.

I had Weber recone a JBL D130F and D140F for me when I got my
Showman. I am not the guy to ask if he made them sound they way they
should, as this is my first experience with this stuff. However I
can tell you that he is fast and cheaper than his competitors. He
emailed me when he got the speakers and asked me how I wanted the
job done, how much doping, etc. I was a satisfied customer.

I used a Weber VST California 12 ceramic in my Hot Rod Deluxe and really loved
it. I sold
the amp but kept the speaker, so I am dropping two California 12s into my
vintage '73
Aims Dual 12. These high-wattage speakers are clean, punchy, and make for really
good
surf. Definitely a good substitute for the JBL D120F, and I'd bet a fine
substitute for the
D130F too. They get better cranked.
Ted makes a lot of vintage-style speakers in standard sizes, any standard ohm,
and with
AlNiCo, Ceramic, or Ferrous Alloy magnets. He has some low-watt vintage style
speakers
based on the popular tweed speaker types as well as his more high-powered modern
speakers.
His prices are good, and he will answer your questions about what speakers you
should
use with a timely e-mail or phone call.
I really like Weber as a company, and I think their products are great.
(This is an unsolicited testimonial).

A little off the subject, but here's another possibility to hop up a
Twin. I used to use a JBL-130 cabinet with my 65 Showman head until
I heard two different guys playing old silverface Twins that sounded
unbelievably sweet. In both cases it turned out they had swapped
Celestion Vintage 30's into the Twins. I went and got a 2x12 Vintage
30 cabinet and liked it so much that I ditched the JBL cab for lack
of use. And I get people commenting on how good the amp sounds. So
unless someone is specifically looking for that signature JBL tone,
I'd say the Vintage 30's are also worth considering in a Twin.

If anyone has put V30's in a vintage Twin Reverb - how did you deal
with the problem of the Celestions having 4 holes and the Twin has 8
studs?
The way I see it you can:
1. Remove the grill cloth, remove 4 studs, and replace the grill cloth
2. cut off 4 studs with a hacksaw or bolt cutters
3. drill 4 holes in the V30's
4. buy a new baffle board with 4 studs or better yet, anchors for
bolts like my Dual Professional
So how did you guys do it?
1,2 and 3 sound like a bad ideas to me.

P.S. There is no substitute for JBL's, although Altec's are nice and
EVM's have their good points.

Brian Setzer uses Vintage 30's in his Bassmans,
according to his tech when the Stray Cats played the
Coach House in the early '90s.
