RI '65 Deluxe Reverb Amp needs help...

royaltoneguitar - 15 Oct 2004 13:30:15

Howdy y'all,
I am looking for advice on how to make my RI '65 Deluxe Reverb sound
warm and good. As it sits stock, it sounds thin like "tin", no
warmth, depth or soul at all. Played loud it is too bright and one
dimensional.
What tubes would you recommend? Or other mods?
Thanks.

My 2 cents - and worth every penny!
I am partial to Weber VST speakers, especially the AlNiCo California 12s with
paper domes.
These are pricey ($185), but worth the money. They are basically a JBL D120F
replacement. They may be a little too clean for your needs. But Weber makes a
bunch of
great speakers, and if you call or write Ted Weber, he will even advise you on
how best to
achieve the sound you want. www.webervst.com.
One reason I went for the '65 Twin Reverb Reissue Custom 15 was because I was of
the
same opinion about the stock reissue Twin Reverb. The big 15" Eminence has more
bass
and more overall warmth.
For a cheap fix, you might try putting a TS 808 or TS-9 Tube Screamer in your
signal
chain to add a little warmth. I use a Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde overdrive,
basically a TS
808 coupled with a metal-type distortion with separate controls and a separate
stomp
button. This two-pedals-in-one allows me to shift from no effect to slightly
dirty drive to
massive grunge/punk without a notable difference in volume. Very cool and
handy.
I'm sure you will get a dozen different ideas on this from others.

Thanks Brian and Gavin for RI '65 Reverb advice. It doesn't seem
likely I'll get it to sound good for surf music. Buzz in Hot Rod
Lincoln uses one and gets good vintage tones out of his, I'll try to
track him down to find out what he's done with his. I'll post if I
find out good info from him...
