Help me find a cheap Surf Guitar

captcorojo - 10 Oct 2004 16:04:04

I'm looking for:
-Jazzmaster/Jaguar shape
-Single coils
-Under $500.
I can think of:
Charvel/Jackson Surfcaster
Ibanez Talman
Jay Turser Surf Master
Eastwood Hornet
The Charvels and Ibanez have been discontinued and I refuse to
buy off Ebay, so they're out.
The Turser has P90 pups which don't do the surf tones very well.
I think lipstick-single coils are better, no?
Can anyone recommend anything else?

Not Jag shaped but the Yamaha SGV-800 is the best bet for "cheap" surf
guitar. They are nice guitars. They Surf Coasters play the SGV-300 but
the SGV-800 is more surf.

I really want the JM shape.

"Jag" as in Jagmaster? They have humbuckers. "Jag" as in Jaguars
are waay to expensive.

Don't know about the states, but in Europe the market is flooded
with "Stagg" JM's.... pretty accurate body shape copy, and dead
cheap. check ebay.de for more info, they're all over the place. The
neck is pretty decent but other then that it's a crap guitar.
also check out Hohner's JM copy, t60 i think (not sure), much better
guitar but different headstock shape.
never mind the humbuckers on a jagmaster... get a pair of japanese JM
pups (strat pups in disguise) or decent JM pups, widely available on
ebay.
if you want you can put in a no-brand JM trem as well, and you'll
have your FankensteinMaster.
This all btw doesn't make sense cause you could get a MIJ/CIJ JM for
around or a little over $500, which would be a way better guitar by
all standards. All the models you mention, btw, are as far away from
JM shape as the SGV or the dipinto, it seems to me. what's the deal
with wanting that shape, if it's not the actual guitar? I'd think
you're better off getting a decent guitar with equal yet different
coolness factor... my 2 cents

Not too sure about that. The Galaxie is way closer in body shape to a
JM/Jag than either the Charvel or the Ibanez, and a generally better
quality guitar than the Turser. As far as Jags being too expensive,
Japanese Jaguars (and occasionally Jazzmasters) pop up on Ebay all
the time for under $500. I got my first Jaguar for $350, and when I
resold it it still went for just under $450.
That, or you could spend even less on, say, a Jagmaster or a
SuperSonic, and spend maybe another hundred bucks or so and get some
P90's that are made to retrofit a humbucker route, and you're still
under the $500 mark.
Other non Jag-shaped options that I like (ignore the prices on these
sites, as all of these could be had cheaper than the prices tha are
posted):
Epiphone Firebird (one of the most versatile guitars made that
doesn't end in "Caster")
se_id/39864/
Dillion Mosrite Copy (what screams surf more than a Mosrite? )
Anything Danelectro
QsacategoryZ33036QQsocmdZListingItemListQQsocolumnlayoutZ3QQsocustover
rideZ1
Plus I love the Eastwoods you mentioned, or at least I love the way
the look. I've never played one though. Looking at the pictures of
the Hornet, it seems to be pretty different from the original
Danelectro - particularly in body thickness/contour. The Dano
reminded me of some of the new Ibanezes, as in the the body
litterally reminded me of an axe blade - not in shape, but as in the
middle thickness was like an inch at most, then tapers off from there
to a rounded edge. The Eastwood is definitely more squared off -
loses some appeal with me because of that. With the original Dano
Vincent Bell Hornets popping up from Time To time and going for over
$1200 easy, the Eastwood is a nice alternative.
Good luck.

Really? I don't see that at all:

As I mentioned, I refuse to buy off Ebay. Too many bad experiences.
But I did price them a few weeks ago. Out of 10, only 2 went for under
$500. Average price was $640.
> Plus I love the Eastwoods you mentioned, or at least I love the way

I like them too but they apparantly aren't making many due to lack
of demand. The only authorized seller has only Red and only one in
stock. Burst isn't due "till Spring."

I like the Jagmaster ALOT, especially the price! But I was concerned
about the tone with humbuckers. I didn't think P90's would give me
a good surf type tone but...
I just noticed the original Jaguars had P90's.
Is this true?

I don't think so - but not an expert... jazzmaster pickups are a lot
like p90's though, at least as far as coil depth/width is concerned.
For JM pups, you could simply replace the pickguard with a jazzmaster
pickguard, or, if you're a toolman, make one yourself from a blank
piece of material. Not that expensive.

The Japanese JM pickups with the narrow bobbin do look like Strat pick-ups in
disguise but they have the Jazzmaster sound.

Like I said, I won't do Ebay and average price on an RI Jag is $640 anyway.
I've seen a couple go for under $500 and they were in horrid condition.
What about P90's in a Jagmaster?
(Think poor man's Jag/Jazz)

supertwangreverb - 11 Oct 2004 12:10:41

This is rather silly, you won't do ebay or accept any of the
offerings people have replied with. I've had some real bad things
happen on Ebay but most were sorted out.
If you buy a Jagmaster and then buy p90s to put into it that's
another 100 bucks right there. It'll sound and look like ass too.
Why don't you just go for a jaguar or jazzmaster on ebay? There's a
dealer on there, guitargai is his name I believe who won't rip you
off, and if its over $500 wait a little longer and save another 100
bucks or so. It sounds like you really want a Jazzmaster or Jaguar,
if your afraid of individual sellers stick to the dealers!

...maybe you could go for a Danelectro...the Hodad is a
nice surf guitar...nowhere close to a Jag or
Jazzmaster...but, honestly, are there any guitars that
truly approximate the Jag or JM?

If you're really dead-set on a Jag/Jazz type body then
I recommend you do one of two things: do what Bill
says and save the extra money for a MIJ/CIJ Jag or
Jazzmaster, or buy a Jagmaster.
The Squier Vista Series Jagmaster is, in my opinion,
the nicest guitar you can buy for the money. Real
nice ones usually go for around $250, and they're made
from the same parts that the Japanese Jag/JM reissues
were made from. There are several on eBay right now.
When you get it, ditch the humbuckers, take the extra
money and buy yourself a set of Jaguar pups, get a new
pickguard from Pickguardian and put it all
together...or have somebody put it together. You'll
have a real Jaguar neck and a real Jazzmaster body, a
Strat bridge and nice pups, and all for well under
$500.

I was very clear in what I was looking for. Read the offerings
again: I appreciate the suggestions but MOST didn't fit.
I've read comments on the Fender BB saying P90's sound very
much like JM pups - That's why I asked. With P90's I'm still at
almost HALF what a USED Jag/JM cost *and* taking a chance
on Ebay.
Many people don't Ebay. Especially with guitars. It's not unusual
or silly.
I do really want a Jag/JM but they're very pricey for me. I've
heard of guitargai but my most recent bad experience was
with a DEALER.
The guitar was described as "MINT" but had an inch long ding
in the back that went ALL the way through the finish. Granted
he let me return it but I'm out $50 round trip shipping.

This is pretty much what I'm thinking.
Except the brand NEW Jags are $250 with Duncan Designed
humbuckers in them. I could sell them and replace them with
P90's or Jag pups.

My local guitar shop has a Japanese Jazzmaster, just like the ones that were
being sold on
Musician's Friend and elsewhere for $400 just a few months ago. I'm sure Russ
would sell
it for $550 or so, so you may want to call him. I have one of these, it is a
fine guitar. I've
even played the one at The Music Exchange (my local shop) and it sounds and
plays well.
Music Exchange, 719-578-0883. Talk to Russ or Ed.
If you wanna call them, tell 'em Gavin sent you!

P.S. They also have a couple of old Danelectro/Silvertones with the Lipstick
pups in very
nice shape; they have some old Japanese Jazzmaster/Jag clones; and typically
have a
Reverend or two. I'll even go down there and photograph the various models and
give you
feedback on how they look and play! So, write me off list or call me if you
want: gavin,
719-471-8764.
For alt surf guitars, I like Danos with lipsticks, tho they don't really look or
sound like
anything but Danos.

Well, I guess similarity in shape is kinda subjective. The only
difference I see in body shape is the lower horn, otherwise, it still
seems closer to me than it's more "bubbly" looking counterparts...
How about a Fernandes?
Or maybe an Italia Modena? (can be had cheaper than the price on the
link)
