Outboard reverb project

Mike Poppitt (mikepoppitt) - 06 Oct 2004 19:39:47

I want to try my luck and assemble an outboard Fender 6g15 reverb
clone. I am looking for schematics, parts lists, instructions, etc.
Does anybody here have any experience making one?

I have never built one but I just finished my Showman cabinet. I got
all of my supplies from and I would stay away from ampwares.com. you can do
much better when it comes to prices. Ampwares deals in mainly fender
stuff so you might want to check them out if you can't find an item.
They are also the ones who host the fender field guide which will have
the schematics. I think they might also have part lists.

I built a 6G15 circuit last year - you can see some pics of the
chassis at my site: As
with all homebrew projects, be prepared to spend more money than you
would if you bought "the real thing" (well, at least the
reissue . . . )
I got my "kit" from STF Electronics; it included about 80% of the
stuff needed to build the tank. They offered the most complete kit
I saw for under $300 (cabinet not included). You can see them at: The
included "directions" (term used very loosely) were quite vague, and
were actually incorrect in a few areas - my experience with them was
not good.
If I were to do it again, I'd build a Hoffman turret board type
6G15. Check out Doug Hoffman's site:
Doug is a great guy, and he has a fantastic website - his pricing is
good, and his service is awesome! Plus, there's lots of great
information (including parts lists, etc.) on his site - he also has
some cool sound samples of him playing some surf tunes through his
amps - nice! His message board is also a great resource for
builders - I highly recommend going there (if you haven't figured
that out yet . . . )
Building your own reverb tank is a great project, and I highly
recommend it to anyone with some soldering skills (and patience!).
I learned a great deal building my tank - even though I fried a
power transformer in the process. The tank sounds *great* !
Feel free to contact me off-line if you want some more detail/war
stories, etc. Good luck - have fun!

Hi Mike,
I've also made my own 6G15 clone, started pretty much
from scratch but followed the schematics fairly
closely with some minor changes for the power
transformer I decided to use. I made my own eyelet
board that mostly resembles the original layout.
Bought the chassis from Komboking and drilled it
myself; most other parts from AES, Mouser, and
WeberVST (I'd recommend Weber for the transformers).
I'm very pleased with the sound; I haven't compared it
to an original or even a reissue, but it sounds pretty
"right" to me. Feel free to ask if you have any
questions.

I too have built a reproduction using parts from an old tube T.V. and an old
radio. It works just great and sounds exactly like the original, probably
because I have an old reverb tank. If I can help let me know.
