That Shadowy/Atomic sound...

Patrick (reverb_10000) - 06 Oct 2004 14:58:01

Being a big Shadowy Men fan (they were the band that orginally got me
into instro music in the first place - being a youngin' I didn't get
into the original innovators until much later), I was wondering if
you guys might have any idea what kind of gear Brian Conelly is using
on the Shadowy stuff and/or the newer Atomic 7 releases. I know he
seems to favor Gretsch guitars (seen pics with him playing a 6120 and
a White Falcon) and in an episode or two of the Kids in the Hall he's
playing a white Jazzmaster, but I'm more curious about the
amp/reverb/echo setup. Any ideas?

DP (noetical1) - 06 Oct 2004 16:45:30

Being that the SMFASP are Canadian...I would guess that
they use either Premier or Traynor amplification and
reverberage...but, of course it's only a hunch...
I know that The Blue Stingrays (aka the Heartbreakers of
Tom Petty fame) favour Premier equipment, and they have a
very similar "Sadowy Men" sound ...also old Love Tractor
had several pieces of Premier equipment in their line up,
and they too possess a "Shadowy Men" sound charachter
If anyone knows the real story, I'd love to hear it...

I live in Toronto and get to see the Atomic 7 play every once in a while. I've
talked with the guitarist before and he seemed real friendly. I should ask him
next time I see them play. The first time I saw them they opened for Link Wray.
A hell of a good show that night!

There's some pics at the link below. Looks like a Gretsch Tennessean?
and a Fender outboard, but I can't place the 1-15" amp. Maybe someone
else can?

Why, that looks like a Standel amp. No wonder he has great tone.

I was going to say, "Probably a point to point
boutique amp." Or are these Standells classified as
such?
About Premier, were they more common up north/in
Canada or would they have been more prevalent in
Canada because they were cheaper than Fenders? I
still like my Premier and even though I haven't
subjected it to much yet I think it's pretty solid.

I guess the Standels would be considered a boutique amp. They were/are
all hand made...
And the pricing! Very boutique!
The original ones are to die for. I've heard some bad things about the
new re-issues, though...

Man, that would HAVE to be a killer show. You lucky Canadian stiff -
who knows if the 7 will ever hit anywhere near me - all we get is
hurricanes.
I was thinking possibly a Standel. As far as the re-issues go, for
that price, they'd better be made of gold. I haven't heard anything
negative (or much at all really) about them, but if'n they're good
enough for Deke, they're good enough for me (too good, probably).
I've seen some of the older Shadowy pics on the Brainiac site, but
the newer Atomic 7 stuff doesn't seem to have that surfy drippy
boingy ouboard reverb tone. A tape echo maybe? In any event I'd love
to know - then I can try and get as close as I can to copping it ;)

Dan Bartley (bigtwangguy) - 07 Oct 2004 16:48:27

Here's the real story...Brian ALWAYS uses a hollowbody, usually a vintage or
reissue Gretsch, although lately he has been using the reissue version of the
Gibson Scotty Moore played. Brian used to use a Vox AC30, he now plays through a
reissue Standell. His tank is a reissue Fender.
Reid Diamond, the old bass player from Shadowy Men ( who passed on a few years
ago ) played a Gibson Firebird through a Traynor bass amp, probably a Mono
Block. I recall one night back in 1979 when Reid's band Crash Kills Five was
playing at a punk bar called the Edge in Toronto, he reached that long Firebird
neck off the stage and flung the ashtray on my table across the room like it was
a hockey puck! The singer in that band, Don Pyle, became the drummer for
Shadowy Men.
I have had the pleasure of playing on stage with Brian Connelly on many
occaisions. Atomic 7 has opened for my rock'billy band The Royal Crowns a few
times as well. My brother did a stint on drums for Atomic 7 for a year or so. As
a matter of fact, Brian's going to be rehearsing with me on the 16th of this
month. I'm playing lead for a country tribute show the next day and Brian is
going to get up and do an instrumental version( of course! ) of Hello Walls. If
there's anything you want me to ask him let me know. I'm serious. I understand
that he's well known and respected in the U.S. He's very humble and would be
tickled to know we're talking about him. I'm sure his ears are burning now...in
a nice way.
Cheers

Hey Davee, the pleasure's all mine! I see Brian downtown quite frequently, so
not to worry about the 16th. Maybe he'll join up.

I second that notion - thanks a million! I've been a Shadowy Men fan
since I was 13 watching the Kids in the Hall on HBO, and I've
envied "that sound" for that long too. (in regards to the
hollowbodies...I swear there are pics of him playing a white
Jazzmaster on occasion, though).
Thanks!

I thought he used to use a strat in the Shadowy guys, but I was
always too wasted, my memory may be suspect. Long time ago anyways.

You got to see them live! I must have spent six months listening to
nothing but shadowy men . They had a huge impact on me.we do five of
their songs. Of course having an average weekend is the hit. Just
start that openning baseline and bam people start making noise.

<<I was thinking possibly a Standel. As far as the re-issues go, for
that price, they'd better be made of gold. I haven't heard anything
negative (or much at all really) about them, but if'n they're good
enough for Deke, they're good enough for me (too good, probably).>>
I haven't heard too much negative about them either. I actually
played through the ones the Lustre Kings use and they sounded pretty
damn good. It actually reminded me of an old Magnatone I used to
have, very warm Chet Atkins sound.
My Jazzmaster sounded like Hank Garland's on "Little Sister."

Dan,
Does Brian know about the Tribute cd to SMOASP that came out a few
years back from Deep Eddy Records? I belive it was called
"Better Than an Average Weekend". And has The Deoras,Insect Surfers,
The Fabulous Planktones,The Coacktail Preachers and many more..
What did he think about it?
After I got that I went out and got all their cd's. I have a
few singles of theirs, but some are hard to find, like the old Man Or
Astroman singles(who also had a semi hollwbody guitar as well if I
recall corectly).
Dim the lights and chill the Ham is my fav. of thiers.

Atomic 7 for a year or so. As a matter of fact, Brian's going to be
rehearsing with me on the 16th of this month. I'm playing lead for a
country tribute show the next day and Brian is going to get up and do
an instrumental version( of course! ) of Hello Walls. If there's
anything you want me to ask him let me know. I'm serious. I
understand that he's well known and respected in the U.S. He's very
humble and would be tickled to know we're talking about him. I'm sure
his ears are burning now...in a nice way.
