Dear Group,
My good friend and fan Sue Swann has posted the first of a series of
pictures from my appearance with The Ventures at the Issaquah Salmon
Fest this past weekend on Sunday October 3, 2004.
As many of you know, I endorse and play Wilson Bros. VM-65 Ventures
model guitars which are designed by The Ventures and made in the orient
for them by Aria.
This show was a blast. On Saturday, I got to record with Nokie Edwards
who TAUGHT me how to play guitar as a kid. Now, in an unusual twist of
fate, I got to teach him how to play on some stuff for my new upcoming
instrumental CD,"Supersonic Guitar". He played on new instrumental
versions of "Rock 'n Roll, Part 2" and "Here Comes The Sun." Nokie ,
his wife, Judy, my wife Loretta, and I had a blast with that all day.
Saturday was capped off with dinner with Nokie & Judy followed by a
welcome home party for Don Wilson and Bob Bogle and Leon Taylor, who
just got back from a 77 day tour of Japan. BTW, the tracks Nokie & I
did The tracks sound great. My new upcoming CD will also features
guest slots from Alan White, Roger Fisher and The Ventures, among
others.
On Sunday, I got to fulfill a lifelong dream and played a show with The
Ventures....not opening for them...playing with them!
I guested on "Johhny B. Goode", "Wipeout" and "Caravan." These along
with the whole show, are part of a new DVD that the Ventures are doing.
Release is set for 2005.
In addition, Alan White (Yes' drummer) guested on "Wipe Out and
"Caravan" and Roger Fisher (Heart) guested on "Johnny B. Goode."
The big highlight for me was playing stereo dual lead guitars with
Nokie on "Caravan." Sounded just like "Live In Japan '65!"
Throughout the weekend, when I wasn't busy with The Ventures or
business meetings with Don Wilson (we're planning the launch of my new
Wilson Bros. VM-70 Signature Guitar co-designed by Don, myself and
Seymor Duncan, I was filming my first ever DVD which features many
selections from my two CD's "Splash!" and "A Day At The Beach."
My new Signature guitar will be debuted at NAMM in Anaheim, California
iJanuary 20-23, 2005.

I am really quite shocked that the Ventures still play Wipe Out...!
And who are the Venturettes? Do they actually play all those gorgeous
guitars?
Must have been quite cool to play with them...
BN
Dear BN,
They still play all their early hits as well. Including the Walk Don't
Run 1st version as a medley with Perfidia and Lullaby of The Leaves!
That one features Bob Bogle on Lead Guitar.
The Venturettes are 6 gorgeous ladies who are friends with, married to
and various other relationships to various Ventures staff and friends.
They don't play (well, one of them does), but they are cute and great
gals.
The best part is that they all use the model that I use (VM-65).
Sometimes, people ask me if I play with them....:-)
It was quite cool to play with The Ventures. They are great friends and
make very good guitars.

Hey Brian,
I have to agree that those Venturettes look like a lotta fun!
I'm not sure if your shock over the Venture playing Wipe Out is more towards
elation or terror. For me, it's the latter. The fact that the Ventures still
play Wipe Out is a point of distress to many Ventures fanatics like myself. I
wish they would lose the number, which they never played correctly anyway, and
replace it with one of their excellent originals or lesser heard tunes.
If you take a look at the Ventures live albums of the past 15 years, there's a
good ten or more of 'em and they all have the same basic track list which
includes Wipe Out, Caravan, Walk Don't Run, Hawaii Five - O etc... They do
occasionally throw in a few bones for us hardcore fans now and then. But enough
Wipe Out and WDR already!! Well, apparently their just tryin' to please the
general crowd which I can't blame 'em for.

Hey Marty,
When Alan White & I got on stage with 'em, they played it correctly
because they followed Alan & I and we know it "correctly."
A lot of their repertoire is suited to general fans interest.
But....the version we did together of "Caravan" was spectacular. Nokie
& I played the lead in stereo/unison. The crowd went nuts on that one.
Maybe I injected a little new energy into the proceedings. Heck, I even
got Don Wilson to smile and laugh, which Bob Bogle has told me is a
rare feat.
The Venturettes are always a lot of fun and are great people. I've
worked with them twice (both times that they have appeared) and
everyone looks forward to their schitck.
Nokie, The Ventures and I have quite a few surprises lined up for 2005.
We'll keep you posted.

Les

Hi Les,
That certainly is a feather in your cap to be playin' with those guys!
My complaint with the Ventures version of Wipe Out has not to do with the drums.
It's the fact that no one lays down the rhythm guitar part. Bob, Don, and
Nokie/Gerry all play the lead line so the groove created by the rhythm guitar is
missing.

Is this to say you put down a rhythm? It would be very out of character for Don

Yes. I put down the rhythm. When the song started, I was playing dual
lead with Nokie and noticed that Don wasn't playing rhythm.
Hmmmm...that won't do I thought. I switched over to the correct rhythm
part. Presto, it sounded much better. So for a change, the Ventures did
the song truer to original form.
