Fender SuperSix Reverb......?

Landlocked44 (theesurrealist) - 04 Oct 2004 01:24:48

Any remarks, opinions, and/or insight on an early 70's SF SuperSix
Reverb(100w)? I'm considering getting one. It has this rich awesome
tone!10"X6 Fender Oxford speakers. Probably even sweeter than my BF
Showman -Phillip

Hey phillip, Had a great time at tacoland fri nite. You should
TOTALLY buy that super six! It's like my quad reverb, but louder
(!), and bigger. It will have way more clean headroom than your
showman/ single 15" combo.
Just out of curiousity, how much are they asking for it? is it a
100, or 135 watt version? (it will say by the speaker output). Does
it have a master volume?
I was actually looking for one of these, but found my Quad for a
deal I couldn't pass up. I havn't had my Quad very long, but now
can't imagine my sound without it.Let me know if you decide not to
get it!

The Super 6 vs the Showman single 15. is an interesting contest and one I would
like to hear. I'm sure the Super 6 would have the way more clean headroom but
will it be as dark? I've always thought that the 15" with the closed back
configuration of the Showman had everything to do with that ultimate surf sound.

Quad Reverb with the bass only on 4, otherwise it's to much. It does
have a naturally bright tone, but what Fender doesn't?(especially
awash in reverb)

Hey Mike. Man, I had a blast Fri. night! You guys have a great
sound. What kind of Fuzz pedal do you use? Unfortunately, as you
know I had sound problems with my Showman. So, the next day I went
down to Spacetone music and spotted this Super Six reverb(100 W
RMS). My friend Jason let me take it home for the week-end and let
me tell you.........this is THE amp of amps in my opinion. Yeah, it
has the Master Volume but I like different varieties in tones and
reverb. The Reverb and Vibrato is so thick! Don't get me wrong, my
Showman is a great amp but it's a bit straight forward.......clean.
The Super Six has an amazing onboard reverb, and like I said more
type of tones to play with. I'm really considering the swap. He's
asking $849.
I was browsing through the Fender Forum and ran across your posts
concerning a squealing reverb...........what was the problem?

I could go on for hours about how much I love it...There is not much
to dislike about the Super Six if you like it loud & clean. I
actually like the master volume fenders better; it gives you a
little drive, but only when turned up LOUD (mine's a '77 135 watt
master volume, & I keep the pre on 10, and i use the master to
control volume, which is the opposite of how most use the MV. ).
Thats a hard swap decision to make,
I would go for the Six to get the headroom and volume. In my
opinion, these are the ULTIMATE Fenders.
Would you keep playing your outboard reverb, or would you use the
amp's reverb? I like the dark, thick, almost sad reverb tone of
silver face amps, as opposed to the drippy aggressive sound of the
outboards (although that rules for palm mutes!). The amp's own
reverb makes it more swampy.
For $849 it should be in damn fine condition, as the going rate
seems to be about $600-$700 for decent ones. I would think that your
current set-up would give you some bargaining power if you wanted to
swap (being blackface and all...)
My Quad reverb needed a new cap or two,and a new driver tube, it
doesn't squeal now thanks to Tonecraft.
Let me know how you decide;

Hey Mike, told you you'd like this list. :) How are
The Upskirts doing? You still sending me that CD?
About the Super Six and Quad Reverbs: aren't those
beasts pretty heavy? What years were they made?

Upskirts are doin great! I got that quad reverb, and we've written a
couple of new songs. Hopfully more shows will follow.
Yes those amps are indeed heavy. Mine weighs in at at about 100 lbs.
but it is SO worth it....no pain, no gain.
Hey Phillip, did you get yours?
Fender made these amps from 72-79; mine's a 77.
I will send you a cd, my burner is down at the moment, but I'm
getting a new one soon....

It's in Wimberly, not to far from San Antonio, you might want to see
if he still has it.

Hey Mike,
Yes I did the swap. It was hard to let the Showman go, but the tone
on the Super Six blows me away!
I was wondering if you could keep me posted on any upcoming surf
shows in Austin. Have the Undertakers (I believe thats what they
were called) or the Queen of Spades played lately? Thats always a
good reason to drive up.-Phillip

Is yours a 100 or 135 watt? It will say by the speaker outs. I'll
keep you posted on Austin surf shows, 3 balls of fire is the only
band that seems to play regularly. I'm gonna work on gettin you guys
up here for a show sometime soon, probably @ Beerland; let me know
your thoughts on the subject.
