non-surf music

xtcguitar - 30 Sep 2004 10:34:55

Hello all,
A few non-surf items.
Im a bigtime surf fan, but thats not all i listen to I'm way to
eclectic, so i wanted to find out what other non-surf bands if any
you are all listening to these days? Lately, Im really diggin The
The Shins, Johnny Hiland, John 5, Belle and Sebastian, Danny Gatton,
The eagles of death metal and for some reason The Cure.
Also, im looking for suggestions on buying a guitar, i want a nice
versatile solid body guitar(not just for surf) in the 1000-1500 usd,
i really want this guitar to have low action(not super low) with zero
buzz, all my current guitars buzz and its getting a little old and i
even own an american strat thats had several prof. setups. Is it me?
any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I was thinking maybe a Carvin?
Thanks
Aaron

The Jeff Beck Strat (the newer model, not the 1st one) is a real fine
guitar for $1329 usd.

I've always been a huge pop punk fan and I'm just
getting back into it since Johnny passed and I started
listening The Ramones a lot for a few days. My
favorite bands are mostly Lookout! Records bands like
Screeching Weasel, The Riverdales, The Lillingtons,
The Queers, The Vindictives, Sloppy Seconds (junk
rock! ha) and pretty much any stupid, slap-happy pop
punk derived directly from The Ramones. It's my
guilty pleasure. I'm also always getting into really
obscure punk bands that never get to the point of
putting out albums, or putting out albums that are
impossible to find, and then breaking up.
Man, if you've got $1000 to $1500 to spend on a guitar
then you've got a lot of options. Are you in the
U.S.? Did you want single coils or humbuckers?
Richard

Same here, but not quite the same. When I was a kid, I started listening
to bands from around here like DI, TSOL, the Vandals, Social Distortion,
etc. Then I started getting into the Black Flag, Flipper, Fear. Even
later, I liked the Brit stuff, GBH, Subhumans, and even a few OI bands.
I still listen to that, when I'm in the mood. As a matter of fact, I was
supposed to go see GBH and the Circle Jerks this past Friday and my
partner to the show flaked on me!
Which leads to surf--I've always liked surf, but never knew where to
find it or who performed it. Not until some of the 3rd wave surf bands of
the 90s came around did I start to really get into it. What really
helped was the Internet. I was able to find things I liked listening to.
Not only was I able to find surf, I found rare punk and ska albums and
CDs I would have never have found otherwise. Furthermore, thanks to
groups like this, I have been able to find out even more about bands,
shows, CDs, etc.
