Reissue tank

bigtwangguy - 27 Sep 2004 16:10:10

I'm checking the price of a Fender reissue reverb tank and it's just
over half the price of this original '62 tank for sale that I know
of. What is the difference in sound between a reissue and an
original? Does an original really sound twice as good? Can I get
that soaking wet sound with a reissue? I'm just a player, not a
collector so I don't care what year it was made.

I have a reissue. My brother had and original that he used back in the
60's. The reissue sound the same as I remember the original sounding,
granted I was 2-4 years old (and sitting inside my other brother's
bass drum) at the time.
I'm sure there are people who will tell you that the reissue is no
good. I honestly think mine sounds great. Maybe it's all that time I
spent in the bass drum....

Man, honestly, for that much money...it's up in the
air. If it were me I'd scout around for a used
reissue tank and save even more. Unless you're in the
big time or a real connessieur of the holy 'verb I'd
avoid dropping the huge coin on a vintage tank. I've
heard people say they've gotten used Fender reissues
for $250, which sounds like a great deal to me.

Speaking of reverb tanks, I took a quick look at eBay
and spotted this one.
Sorry if the link isn't clickable, I only know copy
and paste.
I only paid $150 for my Premier tank, which I believe
is a late 60's and sounds pretty good. Isn't this
extraordinarily cheap for a '66 Fender? If it stays
down around that price I'd be willing to fork over
that much just for the priviledge of doing a real A/B
comparison.

I've had two reissues, and came away wondering if they were worth it. Neither
had the
"sproingy" wet sound that I get on my old recordings of original 60s surf music.
I mean, it
was there, but not in bountious quantities. One had real radio frequency issues;
the other
has some obnoxious electrical noise problems when I crank my amp/pedal
board/tank
combo up into the high registers.
That said, it is still a damn site better than a pedal.
My only hesitancy regarding vintage tanks is: you never know how good the
40-year-old
electronic parts in it are, which makes it nerve racking to use or to spend the
big bucks
on. I think if I had the money, I'd look for a modern, hand-wire version of the
original
Fender tank from one of the boutique makers.
But I don't, so my '62 Reverb reissue works just fine.

You're not alone in those thoughts, Z. I think the reissue sounds great as is
and was not able to tell the difference when I did an A/B comparison with a
couple of originals and the RI.

i'm using a reissue .i don't have an original to compare it to .but
it sounds so much better than the onboard verb of my hot rod
delux.the drunks at the first table are not gonna notice.they are
gonna shout "wipout" not "an original sounds better" but really
having the tank is so much better than not having the tank. miller

One of these days I will learn to proof read before hitting send!
That should read...
"I have a reissue. My brother had an original that he used back in the
60's. The reissue sounds the same as I remember the original sounding,
granted I was 2-4 years old (and usually listened while sitting inside
my other brother's bass drum) at the time."
