Advice needed

ohsyrus - 01 Jun 2002 13:10:49

Played one of the MIA Jaguar reissues the other day. Been thinking
about it ever since. One of the things I really liked about it was
the shorter scale. I also really liked the tone. I thought the neck
had an overly glossy finish, and I prefer satin, however, thats a
niggle. One of the things I didn't like about it was the mute, and
another was the bridge, which seemed like some kind of frankenstein
contraption. Other than that, I loved the way it played and sounded.
So, I'm thinking about getting one, but I wonder, I've never played
one of the Jazzmaster RI, and I am not sure whether I would prefer
the sound of the Jazzmaster to the Jaguar. I have never run across
one in the local music stores. I know alot of you guys are really
familiar with the differences in playablility and tonality, and I
would like to know what you think. If you were going to get a MIA RI,
and you could only pick one, which would you get, and why?
Thanx!

I'd get a jaguar and i got a jaguar. jaguar as a name sounds better
than jazzmaster - sexier and surfier, and it looks better with that
chrome. there are also metal things around pickups which are supposed
to reduce the hum. anyway jaguars came out after the failure of
jazzmaster and were supposed to be an improvement in design and
sound. i think jazzmasters dont have the low frequency cut, which i
like on my jaguar. yeah i think that's enough reasons for me - the
sound is great and even if jazzmasters were marginally better in
sound than jaguars i'd still go with jaguars.

The Jag & Jazz really are different guitars. The JM has a 25" scale with
wide single coil pickups. They often get unfairly lumped together. Sure,
they share a similiar body shape, the same bridge & trem, and both have 2
circuits. But they do sound and play differently. Your best bet is to try
both out and see which you like best. Or just plan on getting them both
eventually :)
I don't think its fair to say that the Jazzmaster failed. In fact, the
Jaguar was killed in 1975, I believe, while the Jazzmaster lasted to maybe
1979 or 1980. And I am somewhat dubious about any benefit from the pickup
claws....
Having said that, I should say that I have a Jaguar too. I love it. If you
don't like the mute then you can take it off (as many players did). The
bridge and trem have their quirks but no more so than say a Strat. It sounds
and plays great, and I love all that chrome, the funky switches, the mute,
etc. It has personality :)
Have you seen these web pages? Here is Los Mel's:
And check out Tom from Germany. He has a cool interactive Jag written in
Flash that lets you see what all the switches do and stuff, plus tons of
cool photos:
