Reverb Unit out of service. Help diagnosis the problem.

jacobdobner - 23 Sep 2004 00:24:23

'63 RI tank. There is no signal when it is plugged into an amp and
turned on. When it is turned off(the whole unit) you can play through
the amp but when turned on it goes silent. What I would assume is that
one of the jacks isn't making contact but since when I turn it off I
can play through the amp. I am a 20 year-old in why does this have to
happen to me mode. Thank you.
Funny anecdote about amp problems. For about 4 months my second amp, a
crappy crate, wasn't working. The second channel worked but not the
clean channel. I looked down at the amp one day and all the equalizer
knobs were turned down. I felt stupid.

Is the spring dampner (wrong name I'm sure, the metal devise inside
designed to hold the spring in place while travelling) pressed up
against the spring? If so, that can make the reverb unit awfully
quite...

It is not that. I played through it dampened once and it still made
sound. I turned my showman all the way up and there was not sound.

Seems to me like it almost has to be something in the
return (mix) circuit, first thing I'd try is replacing
the 7025. Doesn't sound like a jack problem since
it'll pass sound when off.
You've got a few options to try as far as debugging,
which will require a special cable (RCA on one end and
1/4" on the other). First, you can plug the reverb
output jack from the amp (the one that normally goes
to the tank's input) into an actual 8 ohm speaker. It
should make nice clean sound, and get fairly loud.
Next, put that cable back, and this time go from the
reverb tank's output directly into an amplifier's
input jack. This is the pure reverb signal, bypassing
the mix circuit of the reverb unit.
Finally, and I suspect your problem is here, plug your
guitar into the unit's reverb return jack, where the
tank's output normally goes, and hook the reverb
unit's output to your amp like normal. With the mix
turned up a bit, you should get dry clean guitar
sound. But first thing I'd try is replacing that 7025
with a known good tube.
Good luck.

The next obvious things to check would be the fuse, power tube, or
power cable. Beyond that, I'm not much of an expert.

I replaced all the tubes and no help. The fuse checks out. And the
unit does turn on so it isn't the power cord.

Try Kicking the hell out of it. It can't hurt at this point.

I fixed the problem. Which problem I don't know. I opened it up and
soldered anything that moved. A lot of the connections around the tube
inputs looked weak.
And for all you reverb unit users. I put my stock tubes in to see if
it were the tubes and after I fixed the problem they were still in. So
I played through them and boy do they sound bad. They are very noisey.
It is almost like the unit had been kicked minus the metallic boing.
So my NOS tubes are in it now and it is quiet.
