Ok, ok, so I'm a little 'gear schitzo,' so sue me ;)
(Insert 'long post warning here...)
After weighing all the options as far as mosrite copties go, it
suddenly occurred to me that I'm 6'6" with hands to match, and a
smallish Mosrite neck (or copy thereof) wasn't going to work for me.
I've made up my mind on the Jazzmaster. Given my price range, it's
going to have to be a CIJ/MIJ model.
So here's the problem(s):
1. Too many choices. Finishes, 62 vs. 66 reissues (66's are getting
harder to find, and are a little more expensive, but having played a
Gretsch exclusively for awhile, I've gotten accustomed to the block
position markers), dealers, which brings me to...
2. Dealers. Ishibashi? Has them new, but apprently only in CAR, 3
tone and white. Ikebe-Gakki? Has them new,in a virtual rainbow (but
no surf green or sherwood green - which would be ideal), has the 66's
but only in white and 3-tone. Ebay? Slim pickins these days, and hard
to tell who's full of crap and who's on the level. Gbase? The only 2
in my range have already been sold, the others are asking WAY too
much for Jap reissues. Some come with case, some with gig bag, some
neither.
3. Upgrades. After the whole deal is through, we're looking at
replacing saddles and or a buzzstop. Possible replaing guards (I have
this thing for tortoiseshell) eventually the pups...all this stuff
adds up. Will it offset the benefits of getting a brand new overseas?
I dunno. I just don't know.
So - here's where y'all come in. Help me (or make the buying process
more difficult, it's a double-edged sword). Any options I haven't
looked into (dealers, websites to check out, etc)? Anyone have one
for sale? What's cooler, candy aple red or ocean turquoise (but
doesn't everyone have a red JM?)? And, no, I can't wait and save up
for an AV model, it's not gonna happen, the GAS pains are too
intense...
Lay it on me.
And, since you've read this far, thanks.

Jeez, and I thought I had big hands at 6'3".

Try to make it a later CIJ model that has the alder body wood.

I'd try to go directly through Ishibashi, I've heard great reviews
from people dealing with them. Or if you didn't mind having a '62
reissue just pick up one of the musican friends Jazzmasters that are
now popping up on ebay.

I say try it without the buzzstop and keeping the original saddles on
it first. I planned to do these mods on my Jazzmaster and haven't
had a need to yet.

What about a Jaguar??? I started on a Jazzmaster and got a Jag as a
backup and now can't put it down.

I'm pretty sure it's either going to be Ishibashi or Ikebe - Ikebe
has a better selection. It also looks like the 66 is going to be a no-
go unless I want to replace the neck later on with a Warmoth or
something along those lines built to spec. It really seems to be the
only difference, and something that can be rectified later, or not at
all, if it turns out to not be an issue (I have a feeling it won't
be).

I had a MIJ Jaguar awhile back that I sold for some finacial burden
or other not long ago, and when I'd 1st got it set up, the tech filed
the saddles, shimmed the neck and the rattle/buzz/slot-skipping was
never an issue. I'll see how it plays before I start taking it apart.
I loved that guitar (the Jag), though - but I recently had the chance
to do a side by side a/b comparison with an AV Jag and JM (prolly not
the best way to compare, since I'm going Japanese, going Japanese, I
really think so - sorry couldn't resist - anyways...). The JM had the
better sound to my ears - I've got no qualms with the Jag at all.
When I get a few more gear-disposable bucks down the line, it's going
to be near or at the top of the list. The Jazzmaster is calling me
harder, though. (I'm trying desperately not to think of that 66
reissue Jag in the UBOX section of the Ishibashi site,
though...focus, dammit, focus...can't have both, not yet...)
hey patrick miller here.stop the madness i just purchased a jap jazz
(auqua)nice guitar. the last jap jazz i had (red)was kind of wimpy
not alot of swang. now this new one.the beefmaster sounds like waves
crashing on the beach.the only problem is the low e likes to wander
