My wife just got a set of Rotosound RS 88S Tru Bass strings (65, 75, 90,
115) for her Jerry Jones long horn bass. But get this, they are covered in
black nylon! I don't know much of anything about bass guitar gear, and I had
never heard of this. Anyway, they have a very unique sound (and look!); they
sound like I would imagine a stand-up bass would. Very punchy and thuddy,
not a lot of sustain. On the packaging, it mentions these strings were used
by The Beatles on Abbey Road, and there is also an old picture of John
Entwistle (but it doesn't say if he used this particular kind). Now she can
get some really different sounds with this setup compared to her P-bass with
round wounds. Anyone heard of these before?
What bass strings do you all use?
Thanks and hope everyone has a good weekend!

I used to play bass years ago and I was a slave to the same old strings.
I had a Fender (and I don't know what strings I used anymore), but I sure
as heck don't remember seeing black nylon before. I'll keep it in mind
if I ever play again.

Hey Brian,
I have heard of nylon tapewounds before, which is what
I think your wife has. I've seen bass' strung with
them. Some people like them but I've personally never
tried them. If they're Rotosound, then I'm sure
they're good strings. I had a large set of Rotosound
flats on a '57 reissue P-bass that I had briefly and
they sounded fabulous, but I sold it. Before that I
had a big set of Labella Deep Talkin' flats ("the"
bass string according to that surf bass article that's
floating around here) on my '62 reissue and they were
also ultra cool; very old school, very "thuddy". The
impression I have is that flatwounds were much more
commonly found on bass' then, but I wasn't alive back
then, so...
I've gone back to roundwounds for the punk 'n roll...I
feel like I need them to cut through with the
distorted guitar. I had GHS' for a bit, and they
sounded good but I wound up sticking with regular old
Ernie Ball Slinkys (may he rest in peace). So far
I've sweated and busted my way through three sets and
I don't feel the need to change.

Wow, I've used Rotosound before but I never heard of those before. That's
actually pretty cool!

I used to use the D'addario EXL160M (medium scale - 32") on my Gretsch
6119B. They are roundwound 50-105. They had a nice crisp sound to them.
The Gretsch is a short scale bass but 30" strings were too short so I
had to go to a medium scale string. In fact, I still have a brand new
set lying around that you can have if you want. The Wilson Bros bass I
use now (and all the basses I had between) is/were long scale so I
don't need them anymore. Let me know and I'll drop them in the mail.
As far as my long scale basses go, I exclusively use Thomastik Infeld
JF-344 Jazz Flats. Amazing! Super low tension and they sound better the
longer they are on. The current set has been on the bass since I got it
last March. The Fender 51 P-Bass RI (before the Wilson Bros) had them
on for over a year and sounded better then when I put them on. Of
course, at $37 a set I wouldn't change them too often anyway.
Check out They carry a variety of short
scale strings.
