Howdy everyone,
I'm in the process of getting an electric guitar (my
first; I'm real new), and was wondering if I'm better
off getting an amp with reverb built in, or a reverb
effects pedal. Right now I'm looking at a Fender
Frontman, which is available with and without reverb,
and it seems like a good beginner piece of equipment.
Thanks,
Alan

Hey Alan!
Congrats on your first electric guitar! I have a Fender
Frontman 25R, which I use as a practice amp. It has the
built in "Fender" spring reverb. It's a pretty decent
practice amp that can get pretty loud before it breaks
up and the distortion kicks in (perfect for the surf
sound!) Of course, it also has a "dirty" channel switch
if you want the distortion . . . For the price, it's
a great beginner's amp, and the reverb is not too bad.
It's pretty echo-y, but doesn't give you a "dripping"
surf-type reverb, though - for that you'll need an
outboard reverb unit.
When you're ready to move on, you'll probably want to
get a tube amp and, for the most authentic surf sound,
an outboard reverb tank. You're getting into some $$$
here, since the Fender RI reverb tank will set you back
around $400 or so (maybe less used on e-bay), and the
tube amp could be a couple hundred bucks, used.
For the beginner just cutting their teeth, I think the
Frontman (with reverb) is a pretty cost-effective way to
go. Being solid-state, it is reliable (keep in mind
it's not a tube amp, so some say it sounds "sterile").
Good luck!
