This is a good question. I don't think there is much to go on this category,
if you are talking about surf music. There are many surfing (the sport)
videos, but not a lot feature surf music.
The Bambi Molesters have an EXCELLENT DVD. It's PAL, so it will only play on
your computer if you are in North America.
It seems like Los Straitjackets, of all bands, should have a DVD, but they
don't. If you are a fan of very weird, cheesy and campy movies, go buy the
DVD version of "Psycho Beach Party". You will get a great Ben Vaughn
soundtrack featuring bands like Los Straits, The Halibuts, Man or Astro-Man,
and The Fathoms. It also has a full length video by Los Straitjackets as an
extra which was worth the price of ownership in my case.
There was a rumor that Slacktone was going to put out a live DVD,
but........? Dave?
Someone posted a link a long time ago to a place that was selling possibly
shady DVD's of the old Beach Party films, The Ventures Live in Japan, etc.
Does anyone remember that or have a link?
What am I forgetting?

well...for inspiration's sake...there's always the Bruce
Brown DVDs...you know: "The Endless Summer", "Surf
Crazy"...
but, those are old-school surfing movies...
for surf music, I'd check out ebay for the Dick Dale live
VHS that's floating around...it's pretty cool...
really, someone should take the plunge and start collecting
all the loose footage out there...I'm sure there is plenty
of old school footage...and probably mucho second wave
(Agent Orange era) and third wave stuff too...

Pollo Del Mar (ferencnd) - 09 Sep 2004 10:33:25

How many current surf bands have videos or some kind of live
promotional video? If enough bands have something, how about pooling
together to make a compilation DVD? Maybe Golly Gee might be
interested in releasing it (Mel?). Pollo Del Mar has a live take of
our song UBIK. Slacktone has Bells of St. Kahuna... anybody else?
Just having a surf fantasy...

I have Endless Summer. It's a great movie, but thanks for the input--it
just seems like there's not too much out there on video.

I wanted to make a gesture of that sort, but then I thought I'd get a
response like, "Who is going to put in the time and money to make it???"
But I am sure there has to be a considerable amount of live footage out
there.

There was a time when I would set up my high-8 camera on a tripod
and focus it on the stage so that you could see everything and just
let it run. No close ups or any camera movement at all, but I have
complete shows by tons of surf bands. Many are very early
performances by bands like Man or Astro Man, Los Straitjackets (2nd
show?), Laika &the Cosmonauts, Spies Who Surf, Insect Surfers,
Halibuts, Boardwalkers, Slacktone, Jackie & the Cedrics, Phantom
Surfers, Untamed Youth, Dick Dale... can't remember them all! I
REALLY need to get a DVD burner and an extra hard drive! ~Mike

There are the costs involved! Time and money. But you were smart and
lucky to get those performances. What a nice collection that must be.

as seeing him in person. No matter how loud I play the tape, it
doesn't have the same effect as seeing the real thing ( and the
neighbors get mad!)
I also have a bunch of the early surf movies like Beach Party,
etc. They have some footage, so you can see what the players look
like, but they are pretty weak to watch.
My buddy Maui has a ton of footage from the Las Vegas Grind
shows, with some good stuff from Los Straitjackets, Dynatones,
Ghastly Ones, and some other really great bands that have escaped me
for the moment. Someone should put together a DVD of some of this
footage. Maybe someone on the list would be up for it. My band The
Aqausonics, just did a show and we video taped it, and there is a
couple af cool parts on that. Maybe a DVD of band just on this
list, so there would be no legal hassles. Just a thought....

Good idea. I'd pay for good footage.

That's the classic problem with recorded sound or sound/video, it doesn't
compare to being there. I have surround sound now, and it still doesn't recreate
the intensity of the live performance. Of course, I'm not able to crank it in my
condo!
Surround live albums are a joke anyway. Alls ya get is extra audience and some
sound reflection in the rear speakers in an attempt to capture the sound of the
hall.

Urban Surf Kings have a video for Giant Cow, and an Xmas vid
greeting card. Giant Cow is animated, and got good airplay at
MuchMusic and MTVCanada. We'd be game to contribute to the DVD.

Hey Mike,
I remember seein' ya record The Spies Who Surf at Toes in '94 the night before
the big earthquake. Those guys were just too awesome to believe. I felt sorry
for them comin' out here from Chicago and gettin' that rude awakening the
following morning.

~Mike

Incidently, we just recorded a rehearsal in stage set-up yesterday.
turned out pretty well, even if the sound quality isn't that great. I
also rcorded the session with a dig 8 track, but I haven't listend to
that yet. If it's better I'm gonna try to match it with the video.
In a couple of weeks we're doin' a very weird gig: it's a cooperation
with an arty farty theatre friend of ours, on a cultural festival
(not just music). The idea is, a surf band (us) is playing, and
meanwhile, there are fourty clowns in the audience. doing clowny
things i guess. I don't have a clue what will happen then, they might
start doin' the Clowners stomp or we just might get laughed at,
either way is cool. We plan to bring someone to put it on video,
we'll see.
btw, the Bruce Browns films I have don't have surf music, or very
mellow surf music. I have one from '58 I think, with a Jazz
soundtrack by Bud Shank, extremely cool.

I think that place is The Video Beat (www.videobeat.com). I have a copy of
"Beloved Invaders" featuring the Ventures, and it's a pretty rough dup to
DVD. However, it also features some exerpts from the Japanese film "Eleki
No Wakadaisho" (Captain of the Electric Guitar, I think is the translation)
with Yuzo Kayama - cool to see him in action.
They have a bunch of other '60s vintage groups pulled from tape and TV
spots; I'm sure the quality is just as spotty as the one I have. Kinda
cheezy, but pretty cool . . .

I am working on a screenplay for a feature length Los Straitjackets movie. I
won't go into details but the concept is absolutely perfect for the masked
ones.
If anybody knows a stinking rich LSJ fan who wants to burn some money
developing/financing the movie have them email me off list.
Thanx,
GT

Man, you're probably going to have to get lots and
lots of people to invest in an independent movie. I
would, but I'm broke.
