Jazzmaster-like guitars?

purpleckr - 22 May 2002 08:28:48

I've always wanted to get hold of a Jazzmaster, but the reissues are
way too expensive for me, plus that I believe that anything above 1k
$ is exorbitant for a musical instrument, especially when I'm not a
pro.
So, any other good alternatives to a Jazzmaster? For example, I've
come across the Yamaha SGV 800. It's equiped with soapbars, and the
design of the bridge and tremolo are somewhat akin to that of a
Jazzmaster.

Hello Theodoris,
Why not try a MIJ Jazzmaster? I purchased one recently and I'm quite
happy with it.
O.K. I admit it is not a Pre CBS or Vintage MIA Jazzmaster, but quite a
good guitar, with possibilities to customize.
All the original parts will fit. And you can replace the Japanese
Soapbars. (In my opinion the only not so good thing about MIJ
Jazzmasters)
I also like Japanese guitars like Ibanez and stuff, but they are not
like Fender guitars.
Kind regards,
Jerry

I'm with Jerry, try a Japanese reissue. If you really
don't want to spend that much just hawk eBay for one
that's in not so spectacular shape and go for it. I'd
definitely replace the pickups, that was the only bad
thing about my MIJ Jaguar. Otherwise, they're
surprisingly good. I have a MIJ Jaguar and a Vista
series Jagmaster, both are very nice.
If you're interested in something else, I'd try one of
the Yamahas like you mentioned. I have a couple of
friends (a guitarist and a bassist) that are total
devotees of Yamaha, plus they have some pretty cool
looking low-enders. I also know that for a time was selling a very
Jaguar/Jazzmasteresque model that I believe was in the
$400 range. I haven't been in a while, but you might
wanna look.

I think this is a great guitar! I've played one owned by a friend of
mine, and not only does it look wicked cool, it's a great-playing,
great-sounding instrument. If I wasn't newly married and spending money
on the kind of things that married people do, I'm sure I would have gotten
one of these by now, especially as you can find them on eBay for $300 or
less. Well, maybe at some point....
BTW, the guitar does have some surf credentials: the lead guitarist of
the incredible, amazing Japanese surf band the Surf Coasters has often
been seen with what looks like a custom version of this guitar.
