Hank Marvin/Stevie Ray/Dick Dale "Pipeline"

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 01 Sep 2004 13:43:18

I was just listening to Hank Marvin's version of "Pipeline" from the CD "Into
the Light" and
noticed that parts were virtually identical to the Stevie Ray Vaughn/Dick Dale
version from
"Back to the Beach." So, who copied who?

what's the date on Hank's album? Stevie/DD was 1986/87. I've read/heard that
there are two distinct mixes of the SRV/DD "Pipeline", each having one
guitarist being the primary in the mix. I've only heard one, that being from
the "Back To The Beach" soundtrack itself, and from the DD "Greatest Hits"
cd. Any idea where the mysterious SRV primary track can be found?
Without knowing the date or having ever heard Hank's version, I'd say he was
probably doing the copying, more out of tribute/honor than a easy ripoff.
Even the best guitarists still have likes and dislikes, influences and
teachers. I doubt anyone who's ever heard SRV or DD didnt take something
from the experience. All three mentioned here are 'feeling' players, and
that's what gets to me.... I guess it got to them too.
