Post your personal surf gear setup ...

twangstring - 13 Nov 2001 18:51:22

This oughta be fun, and give us all an insight into what's being used
and played these dayze.
Surf genre - I'm not at all into retro surf but prefer new millennia
tunes ... "The Surf Kings" are my gods of surf (and "Slacktone" are
right up there, too).
Surf venue - Currently, solo digital recordings and local get-
together jams with buds; historically, gigged full time with local
East Coast bands for about 11 years, from about '64 on. Oh, and yes,
I ocean wave surf ... I'm NO hot shot pro, just a long time wave
chaser that loves the gliiiide, my surf bio interview's up on Bud's
website -
Guitars - custom Strat clones - 1-11/16"+ corian or bone nut widths,
soft "V" necks, locking tuners, 12" board radius, twin post trems,
noiseless L280, L290 and L490 Bill Lawrence pups. I've got yet
another Musiclander hybrid clone on the assembly table and it'll get
set like my Strats.
FX - Visual Sound Liquid H2O chorus/delay, Nobels ODR-1 overdrive,
tube spring reverb (onboard the combo) - dat's it.
Amps - Carvin Nomad (EL84 based, 50 watts, 1x12" Celestion V30, tube
spring reverb. I also have a stock '73 Musicmaster and expect
another '73 modded MM due in next week - I wanna run these in
parallel, one dry and one with FX, should be interesting.
What's your story, surf Dude?

> Surf venue
The Treblemakers, est. 1995...frequently gigging, infrequently
touring, three recorded full-length releases and seven or eight
compilation appearances (at least those I'm aware of).
> Surf genre
Hmmm...definitely not 100% "trad" surf, and "nouveau surf" makes me
think of "Mermen/Surf Kings/Pollo Del Mar" so that's 180 degrees away
from what we do...I'll have to invent my own genre and say it's some
kind of collision between surf and 60's garage punk and Davie Allan-
style biker fuzz instrumentals...? Somebody once called it "The
Ventures on Crack" and that's not inaccurate.
My setup was different on every one of our records so I'll go record-
by-record:
1st (self-titled) vinyl-only LP on Primitive records, recorded
late '96:
> Guitars
I had a '65 Strat (refinished) and a '65 Jazzmaster (outfitted with a
huge Telecaster neck, the biggest chunk of wood you can get your hand
around)...I think I only used the Jazzmaster on that session.
> FX
My old Fender reverb tank (tube chart stamp identifies it as
January '64, it's a blackface with smooth blonde tolex).
> Amps
Back then I had a silverface Fender Pro Reverb. Sold it shortly after
that recording session.
---------
"Flippin The Bird" CD on Gee-Dee Records recorded late '97.
released '98 - you can listen to the whole thing at
www.freespeech.org/treblemakers
> Guitars
This was pretty much half Jazzmaster, half Strat.
> FX
Same ol' reverb tank.
> Amps
By the time we recorded this I bought a '62 brownface Super. It was
in really rough shape, and the baffleboard had been caved in. I ended
up re-tolexing it in blonde tolex and I made a thin pine baffleboard
cut for a single 12" speaker. I use a 4ohm speaker so the impedence
isn't mismatched.
---------
"The Treblemakers vs. The Doomsday Device" LP/CD on Dionysus Records,
recorded & released in 1999 - - you can listen to the whole thing at
www.freespeech.org/treblemakers/doomsday
> Guitars
Most of this was done with a '65 Jaguar. I used my Jazzmaster on one
song ("The Dentures in Space") and in a few spots I used our bass
player's metallic gold '62 Jazzmaster...but 75% of that record is the
Jaguar.
> FX
In addition to the reverb tank I also used a 60's Tel-Ray Ad'n'Echo
oilcan delay unit (check out www.geocities.com/tel_ray my semi-
informative site dedicated to Tel-Ray oilcan effects) and a few
oddball fuzz...a late 60's Shin-Ei FY1 fuzz made in Japan, an old Big
Muff, and a LEX Fuzzwrong (a clone of a Mosrite Fuzzrite covered in
purple fur).
> Amps
My '62 Super.
----------
Most recently (and on the two new songs we recorded last month):
> Guitars
1966 Gretsch Tennessean, 1958 Gretsch Clipper modified with a P-90
and a DeArmond Dynasonic (a la Eddie Cochran) and a Bigsby.
> FX
The reverb tank, more weird LEX custom-made fuzz pedals (including a
weird Fuzzrite/Univox SuperFuzz hybrid), 60's german-made Schaller
fuzz (the knobs read "Pegel" and "Intensitat"!), mid-80's Ibanez ADL
analog delay (less temperamental and more portable than my Tel-Ray
echo), Vox Valve-Tone overdrive (for coaxing big howls of feedback
out of the hollowbody Gretsch guitars).
> Amps
'62 Super with a 2x10 open-back extention cab.
That's all, folks.

No Mods, and the guitar seems to be holding together well. I had a
friend who did it first, and also has had no problems. I suppose the
screws in the bridge could snap, but can be easily replaced. The
difference in tone is great>

I have a dano too, never put anything heavier than 10's on it, though.
somehow it doesn't look like it will stand the tension. Did you do any mods
on your guitar?

IVAN PONGRACIC (ipongrac) - 14 Nov 2001 14:06:24

This is what I used with the Space Cossacks:
1st album ('96-'98)
'89 Fender Strat Plus (fiesta red, lace sensor gold pickups)
'95 Fender Jazzmaster Limited Edition (Jap, Seymour Duncans Vintage)
'70s Maestro Echoplex (borrowed)
2 Fender Reverb Units - reissues, modded w/ NOS tubes
'94-'95 Fender Vibrasonic Custom (100W, all-tube, 15" speaker)
'93 or so Vox AC30TB reissue (Celestion Greenbacks)
'95 Fender Blues Deluxe (blonde tolex, 12" speaker, 40W)
I would always record with two amps, always the Vibrasonic and either AC30
or the Blues Deluxe. Then I'd balance them in the mixdown.
Second album '98-'00:
more or less the same as above, with these few changes:
Chandler Stereo Digital Echo (no more Echoplex)
'89 Fender Strat (changed the pickups to Texas Specials)
two Fender '62 Reissue Strats stock (got them used, one is probably late
'80s and the other mid-'90s)
Since then, I've also used a Korg Dynamic Echo pedal (which is great!),
and changed the pickups in one of the '62 reissues to Seymour Duncan APS-2
Alnico II Pros. I've also been using a handmade '96 Bedrock Royale Reverb
amp (30W, Class A, all tube including a tube rectifier,
2-12" speakers) for the Shadows stuff (because I'm afraid my Vox is more
or less a lemon - sounds harsh), as well as a Zoom 508 echo pedal. I
think that about does it. As you can see I'm not a vintage snob, for
purely practical reasons - not enough money. But I try to approximate
vintage gear with new issue, and feel I get close enough).

Mike K (windansea_63) - 19 Nov 2001 21:49:23

Hey guys..I'm new to the list..nice to finally be able to chat with
some fellow enthusiasts..
Setup..hmm..let's see
-- 62 MIA Reissue Jazzmaster (Sherwood Green) pretty dead on
(inc. tone wise) to the orig early 62 SB JM I used to have..
-- '63 reissue reverb tank..(tube mods to NOS a must imho)..6v6
too much gain/too harsh!
-- early 70s Princeton reverb..
and that's it!
Wish list:
-- early 60s Fender Dual Showman or Bandmaster head/cab in
blonde tolex..
-- and an orig reverb tank would be nice too..why not? :O)
-- Vintage or 62 reiss MIA Jaguar..Candy red or white will do
nicely.
Vaya con Dios..

I use: Fender strat, v shaped neck, 1964 mustang (sometimes),
Dillion Mosrite copy (can't afford real one). I play these through
an Echoplex and a '65 pro reverb amp. The echoplex adds an incredible
amount of balls to the tone. I'll probably add an outboard reverb
soon if I can find an old one cheap enough, might even settle for a
reissue. Viktor, The Coffin Daggers

I play bass in I guess we'd be a surf punk band, "Snot Rocket to the
Moon".
Basses:
Ltd B-5 (5 string with active pickups)
A modified Peavy Millstone II (El Steev-O! Signature Edition. A lot
of work went into the making of this beast a cavity was drilled into
it to house a Stryofoam, YES STRYOFOAM, Blank (it adds more bass), a
EMG P-Bass Pickup was installed to the mid position, then a cavity
was drilled next to the bridge to house a DiMarizo P-Bass Pickup for
more Punch, oh yeah almost for got the most important part. I pryed
all the frets off with a screw driver because i wanted a fretless. It
Don't Look Pretty, but it rules the world!)
Effects:
Big Muff Fuzz
Dunlop Cry Baby Wah (played half cocked when used)
DOD FX-82 Bass Compressor (Trash Compactor)
Amp:
Peavy Studio Chorus 210 guitar amp outfitted with 2 10" JBL Subs.
I play guitar too but i use more punk set up for that.
