I've seen this topic come up on other guitar forums from time to
time - thought I'd try it out on this crowd (the more I read the
older posts the more gear envious I get).
So...
What peices of gear have y'all sold that you kick yourselves
regularly over?
Mine? Reissue black Duo Jet with Bigsby, CIJ Jaguar (which I'm now in
the market of re-acquiring for a few bills more than what I sold my
sunburst for...ugh!) I know it's not like I sold a vintage 60's model
in either case, but once they're gone....sigh...
My biggest gear-unloading regret is probably my Fender
American Vintage series '62 P-bass. The one I wound
up with is very nice, and I've had a couple of other
vintage series bass', but none were as nice as that
bass. I should have held onto it, but it's too late
now.
I'm currently dreading the regret of selling my
Cyclone II to purchase an amp, but I alleviated that
dread by replacing the Yamaha SGV 800 that I sold at
the beginning of the year, so I could just be swapping
one regret for another.
Then there are things that I've let go and not really
thought about since.
Richard

I was stoaked to unload my Fender Blues Deville, so I could buy a
Cocktailulated Fender Delux Reverb! grin
But, I'm about to unload a Seymour Duncan Tara, the most incredible acustic
guitar amp I have ever played through! OUCH
Money's funny and then you don't get no honey...
Just cuttin back before going over the falls, Rick!

The piece o' gear that I probably shouldn't have let go was a fully bound
12-string black Rick, the kind with the large body and the squared edges. I
could never get it properly intonated so I don't miss it that much but I let it
go for too cheap.

Unfortunately, my list includes:
1. Gibson Marauder: my first "real" guitar:traded
2. Gibson ES-225 (?) I could never positively identify this
wonderful old Gibson hollow body: two single coil pickups
with old time "Gibson" script pickup covers: traded
3. 67 Fender Champ: STOLEN!
4. blackface Fender Showman with 2X12 cabinet: traded
5. 70s Mosrite (non-Ventures) two pickup bass: STOLEN!
6. 80s Gibson Victory Bass: STOLEN!
7. 70s Epiphone Coronet: sold to the pawnshop guy
8. Framus 3/4 accoustic upright: sold to the Bass Shop
9. 80s Musicman fretless Sabre bass: sold to Guitar Center
well, there you have it...
my gear setup nowadays is lean and mean: 2 Danelectros
(Hodad & Bass 6), a MIJ 51 Fender Precision Bass, and the
Retrotone Surfmaster (Mary Kay).
I hope to never sell (or buy) again.
goodbye,
DP

Do you Yahoo!?
Yahoo! Mail - 50x more storage than other providers!
guys I worked in a guitar store in the 60's....
1. I bought an orginal Firebird V for $125. We had no idea what it
was - nobody had ever seen one. Smashed it like Pete Townshend in a
high school gym gig, the headstock broke off, I had it fixed and
refinished in black with a stop tailpiece sold it to a great player
named Peter Heitzman for $350 who still has it.
2. I bought an original Gretsch Duo-Jet from Sam Amato of Sam and the
Twisters for $350. I soon dumped it for what I can't remember. I
couldn't stand that stupid "space adjustable" bridge or whatever they
called it and I thought it had no sustain.
3. I traded the Guild Starfire VI my partents bought me (used) for
a brand new Mosrite Ventures model, Candy Apple (or metallic?) red.
I really didn't like it at the time (very narrow neck and "fretless
wonder" fret height)
4. I had an opportunity to buy a Les Paul custom body and neck with
no hardware for peanuts - I passed.
5. same deal as 4 except is was a mid 50's strat complete - needed
pickup repeairs
The only guitar I really regret not keeping is the Firebird. I'm
really happy with the stuff I've acquired over the last 20 years or
so and don't lust after much any more.
I also gigged a lot with a Showman 15 that was a great sounding amp -
didn't use reverb back then. Then I got to play through my friend's
Solid State Super Beatle and began the deterioration of my hearing.
Boulder Bob
I regret getting rid of my Bass VI reissue some years back. It was
part of a trade that involved a 50's reissue strat and some other
piece of equipment - both of which are now long gone. The reissue
Bass VI are now fetching too high a price for me to plunk down for
one anytime soon. Sigh.

My uncle lent me his late 60's Fender Princeton when I was first starting out on
guitar. I used to play and sing through it in my first band Blue August (there's
some cheese for you) but soon felt that the amp was too small so I aquired a
bigger one. In the meantime, for reasons not known to me today, I dismantled the
Princeton and never did put it back together. When my family moved to a new
home, the Princeton was thrown out!! Just think, some where in the Markdale
landfill site lies the pieces of an all original 60's Fender Princeton...if only
it had of been sold. BTW, my uncle still mentions it from time to time. This
happened in the late 70's. Would I love that amp now for the studio!

In 1982 I was in NYC on 48th Street looking at the guitar shops. I was
a huge Stones fan at the time and when I spotted a pair Zematis
guitars I went into shock. As you may know, all Zematis guitars are
hand made and no two are alike. I checked them both out, and even
though they were going for the unreal price of $1100 I ponied up and
bought the one with a very distinctive mother of pearl inlay in the
neck. It was a great guitar except the neck was small and I have
really big hands so it was uncomfortable to play. Needless to say, in
1993 I wanted to pick up some new gear and I didn't really think much
about selling it, as I rarely played it and I liked Fender style
guitars better anyway. However, I didn't really do any research about
the value of the guitar, so I thought $2000 was a fair price. In 1996
I saw the guitar in Japanese magazine with a value of $16,000 attached
to it. I can't imagine how much it is going for now (and Tony Zematis
is dead.) So while I really don't miss playing the guitar, I kick
myself for letting the investment go.

Unfortunate, but a good story. You may be forewarning others that may
not think to research prices before selling.
