Yes, "Overboard" is one primo surf CD. I like it quite a bit more than their
first.

I'll second that. Also Fathomless is excellent.

Let me do a me too on this one. The Fathoms are truly one of the greats. It
has been a while since I listened to their second CD, but I think I like
their first one slightly better. They are both excellent however. "Getaway
Car" is a favorite song of mine. A great band overall, and Frankie
Blandingo's guitar playing is superb.
I think the reason we don't hear much about them is that they seemed to have
broken up, or at least are on an extended hiatus. I thought someone had
reported that they had played a gig in the last year or two though. They
also show up on the NESMA site, but I don't think that means they are
active.
Art from MuSick periodically reports that their next CD "is just around the
corner", but it has never materialized, sadly.
Anyone remember their website? It was pretty slick.

Brian,
Here's what I know...

The Fathoms were a 5 piece...two guitars, drums, bass and sax. Now,
Frankie Blandino, the lead guitarist has a nickname; it's "Cranky Frankie"
and it apparently was earned, not awarded. Rumor has it Frankie didn't play
a gig unless it was a really cherry gig, such as opening for The Ventures at
The Middle East in Boston in '97.
Well, Frankie also has two other bands he currently plays with...one is a
country/lap-steel band called The Spurs and the other is his three-piece
Rockabilly band called "The Cranktones". The Cranktones is the drummer and
bass player from The Fathoms and Frankie. Just last week I went into
Cambridge to see The Cranktones but one of our party was under 21 so they
wouldnt let us in. We stood outside and caught a few songs through the glass
before they took a break and we left.
The rhythm guitar player for The Fathoms, Greg Burgess, became the
guitarist for Rhode Island's number one psychobilly band "The Amazing
Crowns" (who were once called "The Amazing Royal Crowns" but were sued by
the band "Royal Crown Review" [famous for "Hey Pachuco" from the soundtrack
to "The Mask" starring Jim Carrey] and were delivered a cease and desist
order, so they dropped the "Royal"). Once the Amazing Crowns broke up, Greg
was absorbed into the band "Rick Barton and The Shadow Blasters" (Rick
Barton was the guitarist and songwriter for Boston's own "Dropkick Murphys")
where he is currently playing guitar.
The sax player for The Fathoms, Dave Scholl, is also in a band called
"Four Piece Suit". () which plays what I would
call "theme instrumentals". They definitely have a surf feel on some of
their stuff, but their claim to fame is that a few of their songs were used
on HBO's "Sex and the City". I once contacted Dave in the early days of The
Nebulas to see if he would be interested in joining us for a song or two on
an album, and he was all for it. The vibe I got was that he is more of a
"hired-gun" than a surf afficionado. At least that was the vibe I got...
SIDE NOTE: [The guitarist for THAT band, Milt Reder, also owns the studio in
which they record. Its called "Rear Window Studio"
() and I dream of recording there one day. He
has the sickest collection of vintage gear and when he plays live he plays
through an original '62 or '63 CAR Jazzmaster with the coveted "C" neck.]
At any rate, all the members of The Fathoms are alive and well, but I
think that the combination of all of them being very busy and all having
wildly different agendas these days...I highly doubt they will rally for
another Fathoms album. I could be wrong, and I sincerely hope I am, but I'm
not holding my breath in anticipation.

I remember seeing SOMETHING, but the only thing that stands out from it was
the Cowabunga webring link at the bottom. Oh well.

There was talk of another Fathoms CD on Musick a while back, but I
don't think it has happened. Frankie also plays in the western
swing band the Spurs. They have an excellent CD out on Spinout:
He also plays with the Cranktones:
I think he also gigs with his own surf trio once in a while. I
believe they are called the Blandinos
