Erik, not sure about your "not so nice" sound, but you should "always" (yes,
there are exceptions) put a boost or overdrive pedal first in the signal
chain (otherwise you can end up with weird artifacts, some desirable but
most not). I never found the Tube Screamer to be particularly pleasant
sounding in most cases (too mid-rangy, especially at the higher drive
settings), and finally gave up on mine. I still swear by my KLON Centaur
for a nice full sound in front of a solid state amp, but it certainly is not
a very tone-flexible pedal. Hope this helps.
Best regards, Dana Vincent

I have a question about the '63 reissue reverb...
I tried running a tubescreamer into the reverb, (guitar > Ibanez TS9 >
reverb > amp)
It gave a not so nice sound on the high notes, is this expected? Maybe I
should put the tubescreamer after the reverb? Or is there something wrong
with the reverb?

Hi Dana,
You do mean put the overdrive 'first' before the reverb, inbetween the
guitar and reverb? That's what I was doing. I did try it after the reverb
and it's better. I would love to have a Klon Centaur, I hear they're great,
but hard to find and pricey. I was thinking about the Voodoo Lab's Sparkle
Drive(?) That might be pretty close to Centaur?
thanks,
Erik

Erik, the overdrive should "always" be first, directly from the guitar.
Sounds to me like you are overdriving the reverb with the pedal; try turning
down the gain on the pedal, and/or the mix on the reverb unit to see if that
helps. I don't have any experience with the Voodoo Lab unit, but I remember
I had to wait three months for delivery of my KLON Centaur (each hand made,
no production line; even the "instructions" are hand-written). I did
recently buy one of the BOSS OD-20 Overdrive/Distortion pedals, and it did a
very good job of "modeling" the KLON unit (as well as 21 other popular
effects and pedals). Really a nice pedal (around $180 new), particularly if
you want a lot of variety in tone. Not completely happy with the way the
presets are selected, but that is a minor complaint. Hope that helps a bit.

Dana,
Do they still make them, then? Do you know where I can find one? I've seen
them on ebay before...but not currently. I'll look into the Boss pedal. I
hear the Z-Vex pedals are great too.
thanks,
Erik

all this talk about distortion pedals give me an opening to ask...
Anyone ever try an "Expandora" pedal? comments?
I have an old (circa 1982) MXR Overdrive pedal that is so-so, but I remember
when I bought it, I had my decision narrowed down between in and a Ibanez
TS-9 Tube Screamer. SRV was about a year away from making them (the TS9) a
thing of legend, and to my ears it didnt have the tone the MXR did. Ten
years later, I bought a TS-10 Tube Screamer and have used it a lot more than
the MXR, although I'm a 'lite' distortion user at best.
I'd also like to say how much I hate amps with master volumes, and built in
distortion. But thats just me. :)
