Dick Dale burned down the streets of Glendale last night. His ego was in full
swing and the crowd loved it. He held the large cheering crowd, easily a 1000
and possibly 2000 people for the full 1.5 hours. After 45 minutes of non-stop
intensity, he brought on Jimmy for about 10 songs of father and son duets. For
me, 3 songs with Jimmy woulda been enough but the family crowd really loved
seeing the 12 year old play and they ate it all up. Jimmy left and Dick was back
to the intensity, playing great trumpet and drums as well. It was great to see
Ron Eglit on a return visit to the bass. It's amazing how he can hang with the
obviously impulsive an unpredictable Dick. The drummer was fantastic but no one
I know.

We went to Glendale last night too. It was a great show. We were able
to get a place right up front because we originally were going there to
see Big Sandy. It wasn't until later that we found out about Dick Dale's
performance.
My husband held up our 2 year old and Dick gave her one of his picks with
his logo on it. Nice.
I attached a picture, but I'm sorry the resolution isn't better. We took
it on the phone camera and Dick moves around so much that it's hard to
capture a good photo.
The Big Sandy performance was great too. For those of you who aren't
into rockabilly, Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Boys put on a good show.
Check out their stuff sometime. Their CDs are good, but the live
performance is so much better, kind of like Dick Dale. I know they have
a website, but I'm not sure about the URL. Use a search engine--I'm too
lazy to right now.

Sorry, the picture didn't work. I'll try again.

Dick was great as usual. Too bad some yahoos in the crowd were getting more
than a little annoying when Dick and Jimmy were having technical difficulties
with their new Minaret (?) Flaming guitars and later because Dick apparently
did not realize that his sole reason for being there was to play these bozo's
favorite DD song. I thought I had left these idiot audiences when I moved back
to LA from Phoenix.
I have to admit the Dick & Jimmy portion of the show does kind of grow on
you. And the kid can play.
The best part about seeing Capt. Ron back on stage with Dick is the fact that
you can tell just by the smile on his face that there is no place in the
world that Ron would rather be than on stage with Dick.
The Neptunas opened the show and turned a great set of mostly instro tunes
with a few garage vocal numbers. These girls rock.
Big Sandy was the big attraction for me also at least until they announced DD
was going to headline after Dave Davies bowed out due to illness. Rockabilly
is too limited a term to describe Big Sandy. The best way I've found to
describe them is to say that they are Rock and Roll circa 1955 back when nobody
was
sure if rock was a new style of honky tonk country, white rhythm and blues or
the bastard child of both. Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys are all of these
and more. If you ever get a chance to see them in a club, go. It's a trip on the
"way-back machine" to a time when music was something more than
demographically defined "product." It's too bad they tore down the Palomino.
They would
have been right at home there.
I took some pics too. I can try to put them on the group site if anybody is
interested.

I was close enough to see your child receive the pick, Kristena. I didn't know
that was you. I worried that the pick was just the right size for the kid to
choke on. I'm a worry-wart!

your Daughter and Dick gave her the pick. Man small world I guess.
Big Sandy's Drummer and 2 of the guys from the Dynotones(known as
the Sleezy Surfers) are playing at the Continental in Fullerton
Tonight around 9:30 or 10 pm.
It'd be cool to meet you sometime, it seems your really into alot
of different types of music. And an avid supporter of live music.
Very cool. later,

I am interested in your pictures!!! I took some on our other camera
phone and I found a better one of Dick Dale playing. Once I download it
to my computer, I will pass it along.
Thanks for the great review of the show. You summed it up pretty well.
Speaking of the rowdy audience, I heard some woman tell those obnoxious
guys to take a hike! It was a little amusing.

No, luckily she quit putting things in her mouth, but you never know. I
let her marvel at it for a while, then I put it away. I'll keep in in
her baby book as a keep sake. The next day, I asked her, "Did the man
give you that?" She said, "Yes, skull." (because of the logo). Maybe
it's because I'm the mother, but I thought it was cute!

PS: Where were you at in the crowd?
Yes, I love live music. Unfortunately, having kids does not enable me to
go to shows when I want to. Yeah, I'd like to meet people from this
group. Maybe when I have my annual luau next year and I have Matt from
the Reventlos play! You'll love that. I'm acutally planning my first
annual "Dance Craze" party. It will be ska and Jamaican jazz. Maybe I
should search out a Yahoo group for that. Hmmmm.....
-K
Jeff- Do you like tikis? If so, I have interesting information
regarding the term "tiki." I love Polynesian and Pacific Rim culture so
much, that I went so far as to take a class in it.

You know, I thought Big Sandy's drummer looked familiar. Has he been in
other bands?
I was able to get the whole band to sign their picture from their
website. It's the same picture off the back of their new CD.
I was able to meet Big Sandy for the first time. I first heard that band
about 6 years ago. A friend of mine told me about them. Big Sandy
played at our friend's club called Tiger Mask. I didn't see the show,
but I checked them out by recommendation of my friend who helped out
Ralph at Tiger Mask. Good choice. I loved them the first time I heard
them. The bad part is that I never saw them live until I went to the
Hootenanny a few weeks ago. The live performance is good--full of
energy. I like that.

Are any of you into the Cramps? Did you see Poison Ivy and the singer (I
forget his name) there? It turns out that Poison Ivy really likes Big
Sandy.

OK, the picture is not as clear as I thought, but I think it's still
better than the previous one I sent.

Lux and Ivy were regulars at the Crown Books that used to be about two blocks
up Brand. Back when I worked there on of my coworkers was the girlfriend of
Steve from Untamed Youth. This was back when they had just moved from St.
Louis. The first time Amy saw Lux and Ivy walk into the store she about had a
fit.
By the time Tiny Tim came into the store Amy didn't seem to care. Only a
couple months in Hollywood and she was already jaded ;)

IT MUST BE THE SAME ALL OVER, THIS SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE SHOWS I'VE
SEEN HERE ON THE EAST COAST...........
3) Having said that, has anyone heard DD play Miserlou the way he
recorded it originally in the last ten years? And what about the
original beat which I think is so important to the song? Has
anyone
even heard him play it all the way through in ANY version? With
the
bridge? 4) DD's show isn't much of a musical experience - it's a
show.
You
don't go expecting to hear songs. You go to see him make his
silly
faces, hear all 110+ db's of his Strat/reverb/Dual-Showmans, pull
up
barely-dressed teenage girls to hold up sheet music so he could
play the same trumpet part he's been playing for 40 years in the
middle
of the Wedge, and then feel them up, and listen to him embarass
himself
by talking about how he suffers with the indigenous people of
Earth,
how his soul cries out over the destruction of the environment,
how
he taught Jimi and Stevie everything they knew and their entire
catalog was actually an homage to him cause they thought he was
dead,
how he invented the Stratocaster and maybe the motorized airplane
(though he thinks there may have been a couple of brothers around,
too, but it was mostly him), how Deep Purple actually stole Smoke
on
the Water from one of his unrecorded riffs and to prove it he'll
now
just play the riff for about ten minuts, etc... If Slacktone
plays
the entire DD catalog right before his show, it wouldn't make a
damn
bit of difference, cause that's not why people come to see DD.

I saw the dickster two times. But the first time I saw him he played
the famous ROSKILDE festival [Denmark] in the mid 90`s in front of
2000 people goin WILD, it was a fuckin awesome and powerloaded gig,
wow ! Probably the best surf concert I saw..
The second time I saw him [in Berlin], he did the show everyone
describes here, with all the standard gimmicks Hendrix-bla bla, Smoke
on the water, trumpet, permanent promoting his "new cd Calling up
spirits, for only 30 Deutsch marks", it wasn`t so refreshin like the
first concert I saw, but quite entertaining and funny and still
better than 70 % of the concerts I usually see.
I don`t know nothing about his behaviour and his ego, but he`s still
one of the best guitarist [still not better than LINK WRAY of
course].
Interested in more dickism ? Than check out the Phantom Surfers "FUCK
SURF MUSIC" 7inch or the "Phantom Surfers and Dick Dale" LP ... funny
stuff. "Listen to the pope of the surfguitar.."

It's been trios everytime.

A Bolero or something like that, it's hypnotizing, whew!
