Hey Dave, you got me there. I've never heard of Love
Tractor. If you've ever heard of the band Pylon,
whose heyday was back at the dawn of The B-52's and
REM, I work with the guitar player, Randy, and he's a
font of information about Athens bands since the late
70's so I'll ask him about on Monday. Chances are if
the've played here he knows them and has the albums.

R.E.M. recorded a very surfy instro song called White Tornado (also listed as
"Generic Surf" on sleeve). Not much reverb, but great surf drumming, lots of
energy, probably around mid-80's. It can be found on Dead Letter Office. A B-
side/outtakes comp with a couple of Velvet Underground covers too.

I have a 45 that I bought in the 80s that has that song on the b-side.
It was more upbeat than their usual stuff.
For anyone who hasn't heard onld REM, it's pretty good, but you have to
be in the mood for it. Don't think of that shiney, happy, bs crap.

I used to live in Athens, GA (1988-2000), and became a big fan of Love
Tractor. They had stopped playing when I arrived, but I got hold of
their first three instro LPs (later they switched to doing mostly
vocals). I wouldn't say they ROCK in a heavy way, but it's engaging
stuff, akin to what Pell Mell does (but more melodic and less repetitive).
I once interviewed their guitarist Mike Richmond, who (live Peter Buck
once upon a time) worked at the fabled Wuxtry Records. He said they'd
gone vocal because they weren't getting anywhere as an instro band. I
finally got to hear Love Tractor play live once around 1999 when they
re-formed for a few shows. They were tight. Interestingly, they went
back to 90% instrumentals. I think they went back to their day jobs
after that.

Thanks for the update Moon Dawgie!
I have 3 Love Tractor cassetes...two are pure instrumental
and one is a cassette EP with vocals...my favourite Love
Tractor vocal song is their cover of The Gap Band's "Party
Train"...
Love Tractor was mainly a late 80s early 90s instro band
sort of like the Lawndale or Djam Karet...also sort of like
Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet...
good stuff..
