JazzMaster

poseidonsurfband - 14 Jul 2004 17:33:04

Come to think of it,,,,,,,,,,,I don't think I've ever seen a Jazz
guy play any Jazz on a Jazz Master.
What's up with that? Are there any jazz recordings with jazz guys
playing jazzmasters? Did I miss something crucial? Its usually the
huge boxes they like. Any references would be nice. Thank You!
Thoughts?

There's many sub-divisions of jazz. I think I've seen an old Jamaican
ska band use one of those. I'll keep my eyes open because I'm going to
see the Skatalites next month.

Legend has it that Fender designed the Jazzmaster to lure away the
Jazz players from their "big box" guitars. It didn't seem to work
however. The surf guys sure picked them up though!

Check out the Joe Pass DVD from Stephen Grossman. It had Joe absolutely smokin'
the trad-jazz on a Jazzmaster in the mid-60's. Years later, in a Guitar Player
interview, Joe would totally dis solid body guitars calling them "planks" and
giving me a great idea for a band name. And that's how we bacame the
Plank-tones.

Mickey Baker and Roy Lanham.
MB wrote a book on jazz guitar and Roy Lanham is a
country jazz guy from the fifties.

Leo Fender actually thought that the Jazzmaster would be embraced by
the jazz guys who played big archtop Gibsons. A slight
miscalculation....:-)

Great band name, then!, To quote musically our friends at School House
Rock,"Without Mother Necessity, where would we be?".
I'll check out the DVD.
