speaking of flatwounds....

Robb Lowe (robbhatesit) - 11 May 2002 17:13:24

A couple of days ago, I strung my SRV Strat with a set of flatwounds (Fender
12-52, stainless flats, I added a seperate unwound 3rd .022, replacing the
wound .24) instead of my usual D'addario 011 rounds. I had tried flats years
ago, but didnt like them... I'm really impressed with these however.
The setup on the guitar was WAY different however. The added tention of the
flats pulled the bridge up at least 1/4" (I usually have it flat against the
body). After fixing that (2 more springs and a couple of turns) I am pleased
to say they play nicely. Smooth as glass and not as bitey as the nickel
rounds.
They are a bit on the heavy side though - any one use any different brands
or guages on the strats and jazzmasters? Any setup tips for flats over
rounds?
I'm not sure if this is a permanent switch or not, but they definitely made
surf songs MUCH more authentic sounding and easier to play. (i.e. - Dick
Dale picking)

Give yourself a while to get used to them. My Jag has 12s on it (D'Addrio
Chromes). When I pick up my old guitar that is still strung with 9's I have
a good laugh now. I did have to adjust the truss rod and tweak the action
after going to the 12s. They seem to fit in the nut just fine. I was glad I
didn't have to mess with that.
Personally, I found that I could lower the action with the 12 flats. My
roundwounds seemed loose and floppy and liked to buzz. The heavy flats seem
tighter to me and no longer buzz. I am really glad I experimented with them
as I think they sound great. I kept the wound G though. Once my fingers got
used the heavier strings, I didn't miss the unwound G.
I still have 11 rounds on my Strat and I may try 12 flats on it as well. I
have heard that 12's on a Strat are much stiffer and more difficult to play
than 12's on a Jag because the Jag has a shorter scale. I guess I'll see for
myself.

I never understood why people replace the flatwound G
for an unwound one.. I think it sounds good and
doesn't affect playability. Is it just to be picky or
is there a reason behind why this is done?

I guess it's what you're use to or willing to give up. To me, the wound 3rd
feels 'weird' and doesnt have the snappy tone I expect from that string.
Plus, I'm still more of a bender than most surf players, so the unwound 3rd
works better for me.
If I had my way, I'd have all 6 strings unwound.
