Squire vs. Fender Cyclone

poseidonsurfband - 11 Jul 2004 18:06:50

Hey, I just got here. Cowabungans told me this is the place to post
the following,,,,,,
I checked out both the Fender and Squire sites for the Cyclone. the
only difference I could see was the width of the neck differed by 1
mm(42mm v.s 43mm). I couldn't get both windows open from both sites
to get an accurate side-by side,,,,but there seems to be no
difference,,,same pickups, same wood,,,,,,
Would a Cyclone be an ample surf guitar? Why shouldn't I just get a
Squire? Their M-77 for like 250.00 is a great guitar. No bull. I
even helped a new student get an Affinity(made in Indonesia) at pawn
shop for near nothing,,,that seemed to be more solid, stayed in tune
(how the royal heck this guitar does vs. my 1990 American Strat,,,)
and seemed more solid than the Afinities at Guitar Center. What's up
with that?????
I had a student once drop some nice TexMex pickups(he got for free
in a poker game!)in his Mexican strat. With your eyes closed, ya
wouldn't know you weren't playing an American.....
Should I really go get a Jag, Stang, or JazzMaster instead? Aren't
they kinda in the same family?
Suggestions on Mosrite copies?
Thoughts?

The Cyclone has a TexMex in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge. Neither are
pickups that I personally prefer for surf. A Jaguar or Jazzmaster are the better
guitars for surf, at least for trad-surf.

Hi Poseidon,
I didn't know there was a Squire version of the Cyclone?
I think the girl (Maya?) from Gein & The Graverobbers plays a Cyclone (on
rhythm guitar).
You might also look into the Cyclone II. It has MIA (made in America) Fender
Jaguar pickups (3 count them 3 ah-ha-ha), which may be more of a traditional
pickup choice for surf than the first Cyclone. But it all depends on your
taste and what you are going for.
It is very hard, subjective, and dangerous to suggest to a complete stranger
what kind of guitar he/she should get. Try to play them all and pick one
that you dig and is in your price range.
Jaguars and Jazzmasters are only similiar in their body shape, tremolo, and
lead/rhythm switching systems. They have different pickups and scale lengths
which lead to different sounds. The Mustang is a completely different
animal; originally a "student" guitar with a very odd tremolo, and short
scale neck. Different pickups that you can flip in/out of phase (I think).
As for Mosrites, you just missed possibly one of the longest threads on the
subject we've had in recent times. Check the archives from within the last 2
weeks.
Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

Yes, there is a Squier version of the original Cyclone
with the same pickup configuration, but I don't think
the pickups are the same. I believe they're made in
China or Indonesia and part of the Squier Deluxe or
Standard series, which means that they kick the pants
out of the Affinity series. Every Affinity series
guitar or bass I've ever played was junk compared to
other brand's downmarket guitars in the same
pricepoint. They wouldn't hold tune, sounded thin and
solder joints would always come loose.

Yes, Brian is right, Myra from Gein and the
Graverobbers plays one and it gets a nice chunky
tone...or maybe dirtier would be how to describe
it...not trad, but good. The pickups in them are
nicer than the standard Mexican series pickups because
it's part of the "Deluxe" Mex series.

Well, maybe you should, but I personally wouldn't
recommend it when a used Cyclone or Cyclone II can be
had for a marginal amount more used. It's going to
have better hardware and pickups. They also have some
cool color options.

If you like the Cyclone, go for it, but IMO the
Cyclone II is the way to go for surf. Same guitar but
with three American Vintage series Jaguar pickups with
Jaguar switches. As you noted with the Tex Mex pups
in your friend's Mexi Strat, it's hard to tell you're
not playing something more expensive with the nice
pickups in, and the AV Jag pups are nice. Mine sounds
so good (mostly like a Jag, same pups and the scale
length is close, 24.75" to 24") that I've resisted the
urge to buy anything else in the year or so that I've
had it and it's held up to extensive beating from me
on a daily basis.
