All the surf bands you can think of...

Richard Hawes (errant_jedi) - 10 May 2002 18:56:48

Ok, I thought I could call myself a surf fan
before...but I realized after hanging around this
board and a few other places online that I'm only
touching the tip of the iceberg. There are a few
other bands I want to check out, mostly newer ones
like Phantom Surfers and Boss Martians, Jodie Foster
Army...the list is so long, and I've actually started
saving mail from this list to keep up with it. If I
were to buy one release from each of these bands, or
any other bands (except for the old stuff, I'm pretty
well versed unless it's just real obscure) which ones
would you recommend? Surf fan on a budget and all...I
want to hear what you guys think and your
recommendations.

Not sure what's on your list, so I'll just tell you what's been spinning in
my CD player during my daily commute for the past few weeks . . .
Sir Finks - Instrumentals in the Key of Boss
Volcanos - Finish Line Fever
Nebulas - Nebula One
Dragstrip - Reaction Time
Treblemakers - Flippin' the Bird With
Vara-Tone - Jetty Subject to High Surf
IMHO, all of these releases kick some serious butt!
That's just the latest rotation - I'm still way behind in filling out my
never-ending "wish list", which is full of stuff by the guys on this list
which I don't have yet (like Splashback, Space Cossacks, Urban Surf Kings,
etc.)

Hi,
The Phantom Surfers are kind of the clown princes of Surf Music. Their stuff
is very lo-fi and basically sounds like it was produced on a boom box. If
you like wacky humor and your surf with tongue firmly in cheek, then I
recommend "The Exciting Sounds of Model Road Racing" (its a slot car racing
concept album!) and "The Great Surf Crash of '97". They also put out an
album featuring the Legendary Davie Allan (King Fuzz) called "Skaterhater"
which is quite good (if you like fuzzed out guitar thanks to Davie) but not
totally representative of The Phantom Surfers. Their stuff will crack you up
and its a lot of fun. Your jaw won't be on the floor like it would be for
Slacktone or The Space Cossacks, but never the less I find them enjoyable.
Avoid their "XXX Party" CD, unless you like X rated comedy albums (not a
whole lot of music on that one). I have to give them props for having the
coolest guitar I have ever seen. Its a double neck guitar....Jaguar AND
Jazzmaster!!!!
I only have one Boss Martians, and I didn't care too much for it. The
instrumentals are quite fine, but more than half of it is frat rock/hot rod
style vocals. But I don't usually go for that style anyway. Your mileage may
vary. I think they have moved away from surf/hot rod music recently.
Never heard of Jodie Foster Army...what are they like?
There is lots of great "new stuff" to try out: Jon & The Nightriders, The
Bambi Molesters, The Space Cossacks, Slacktone, The Nebulas, The
Penetrators, The Treblemakers, The Bomboras, Los Straitjackets, Satan's
Pilgrims, and many many more. Don't forget Splashback and The Varatones.
Of all the newer stuff I have gotten lately, The Nebulas are really kicking
my ass. Thats a damn fine album. Keep your eyes peeled for a new live
Slacktone disc too.
Here is an idea if you haven't tried it yet. Go to Phil Dirt's Reverb
Central and browse his reviews. An incredible resource...I usually agree
with Mr. Dirt, although he hates The Phantom Surfers.
Good luck,
BN

I think Zero Gravity by Laika and The Cosmonauts is super neat - that
was the first surf CD I bought. 'Glorious Lethal Euphoria' by the
Mermen is a great CD - very underwater. There is only one release
from The Ghastly ones, and it's great Dick Dale style picking
thoughout, power surf. Someone suggested Slacktone (thats a band) and
i downloaded a few songs like Longboard Legato, Spark, Tidal Wave,
Outsider. Now Slacktone are probably my favourite surf band, after
Dick Dale. They got good melodies (which do not sound Japanese or
Arabian like many surf tunes, and I am happy about that), they are
very surfy (i.e. sounds like it's about surf and not ghosts or space
monsters or jack the ripper) and yet not beach-boys happy. Seems like
they take their surf serious.
Thats what I like. That and Dick Dale.

Yeah, I had heard some cool Phantom Surfers mp3's so
when I saw one of their vinyl records at off the
record for like $3 I bought it (they also had the
davie allen one, but I'm not really into the fuzz
stuff). Like the only fairly decent surf tune on the
entire record has Tipper Gore orgasming behind it.
Necro Sue is a cool cover though. ;) Other than that
XXX party isn't really worth even listenning to.

JFA is an awesome band. theyre more old school hardcore than surf
imo. so if you like punk you should definetely check them out. they
play some surfy songs but i wouldnt call them a surf band.

I checked them out, their covers of Walk Don't Run,
Baja, etc. are pretty damn cool. Most times when punk
bands cover surf tunes they give it the distortion
treatment and it comes out sounding like metal. JFA
does a good job and gives the songs a real edge.

"The exciting sounds of model road racing" is one of my favorite
c.d's, brings back memories of dunken, drug induced insomnia, now
clean, sober and broke, I get most of my stuff on-line- Personal favs:
(Some are still together, others are not) Los Mel-tones, Soda Pop
Spys, the Dead Barons, Man Or Astroman?, the Bomboras, the Mermen,
Los Straitjackets, Aqua Velvets, Halibuts, Laika and the Cosmonauts,
Bambi Molestors,the Fathoms, Golden-Tones.
