I almost always stick with the way I learned it and/or
figured it out, but sometimes I go around the
fretboard and figure out alternate fingerings just for
the heck of it. Unless speed necessitates it I
usually always go with the 5th fret on the lower
string rather than the open string for the reason you
noted-more ready control over the sustain of the note.
