Got to see a surf show last night

Richard (errant_jedi) - 08 Jul 2004 16:39:27

Well, here in the much overrated college-music town of
Athens, GA I got to see a little instro surf action
last night. The band that's been on and off around
here for as long as I've been here reformed (right at
the time that I was trying to put a band
together...figures) and played a date opening for some
overhyped indie rock band. They're called The Curl,
and the last time I saw them was a bit of a fairwell
show because their bass player had to go to prison for
something silly. But, they're back now.
The last time I saw them wasn't very good...they used
distortion pedals and the sound in the place wasn't
good at all. Last night, however, was a great
surprise. They had added a third guitarist, a Jaguar
through a Twin Reverb; the first rythmn guy played a
Gibson hollow body through some unidentifiable
amplifier and the lead guitar player has what I think
is a Framus Jaguar copy through a Vox amp. For being
such a small amp, the Vox sounded really, really good,
and the overall sound of everything was nice and
clean, a welcome change from last time.
They played a few standards, and a couple of songs
that I knew but couldn't remember the names of (more
well known obscure songs that I've heard billions of
times but didn't bother to remember the names of, it
always annoys me during the show) with a couple of
originals that weren't too shabby either. The
highlight of the show were two pop covers they did; an
Annie Lenox song that I think is called "Talk To Me
Like Lovers Do" and a cover of "The Metro" by Berlin.
The Berlin cover was awesome and made me jealous that
I hadn't thought of doing it first. Outside of a few
flubs that probably nobody in the club but me noticed,
it was a nice, tight set and my drummer friend was muy
impressed with their drummer and went to get some
pointers after the show.
Anyway, it ain't much, but it's all I get around here.
Even though these guys don't do exactly what I would
do if I had my own band, there's enough overlap that
I'm canning my band efforts for the time being. My
last efforts got me a few phone calls from older guys
that thought I wanted to do Beach Boys covers and an
email from the leader guitar player of The Curl asking
me contact him for a show if I got my thing together.
Sigh...anyway, surf on.
Richard

That's awesome Richard. Support live music! I always learn something from
watching bands play live, even if they aren't my cup of tea. Live music
rules!
Maybe you could sit in with them sometime? By all means make friends with
them and get some contacts built up. That could lead to something for you.
Best,
BN
