Farfisa

-=Brad Davis=- (tammibrad) - 28 Jun 2004 22:36:09

Forgive me if this has been discussed....for those familiar....does anyone
know which Farfisa is a good one to get? I can't tell which one Laika and
the Cosmonauts use. Opinions? They don't seem that expensive...

Hi,
A Compact combo should suffice...

Hi,
If you get a "compact duo" or simelar Farfisa organ, make sure you get
the Farfisa F/AR reverb unit as well.
The portable organs don't have reverb built in, so farfisa made a Solid
State spring reverb to go with it.
They are relatively cheap to find, but a complete, mint working Compact
Duo with F/AR unit is a bit more expensive.
Farfisa designed the F/AR unit as a pre-amp and reverb for their
portable organs. It has two inputs (organ and guitar)
volume-treble-bass-reverb control.
But it's not a typical wet reverb and not as warm and splashy as a tube
reverb. It comes with a large spring pan.
I use a F/AR unit for guitar after having a cap replaced for more guitar
friendly reverb. It does make our band stand out a bit soundwise, since
we don't have the fender spring tank sound. (although I really like the
fender reverb as well)

the coolest ones were the compacts & mini compacts - they made a variety of
models & colors. Those are the ones most used by contemporary surf & garage
bands (like the Bomboras, Ghastly Ones, Untamed Youth, etc.). Laika uses a
Fast IV or Fast V, which I believe came out after the compact series -
probably later in the 60s (they also use a Nord Lead synthesizer which
emualtes the moog-esque analog synths of the 70s and early 80s. Farfisas
along with the Vox organs fetch quite the lofty sums on Ebay and
specialty/repair shops -even the ones that admittedly don't work still get
$100 - $200 just for the parts.
Check this site out for some cool pictures....
If anyone is in the Northeast, I have a Fast IV (maybe a V) I might be
interested in unloading for the right price - I wouldn't ship it, but I know
it works.

Although the Farfisa compact is ok, it's a little cheesy sounding. I
think the Vox Conntinental is much better sounding and a better buy (
think 'House of the Rising Sun' or the first two Doors l.p.'s ). The
Conntinental has a very lush sound a killer vibrato, plus they seem a
little better constructed. The Farfisa is a bit creepier sounding
though and can be found a lot cheaper than the Vox. My organist uses
a dual manual Vox Conntinental II and sounds absolutely beautiful,
although we also have a Farfisa compact which is broken, so it
doesn't really get used. Bassically though, any 60's Italian made
organ should be good for surf type stuff. Viktor

Hi All! I'm a new member to the group and have really been enjoying
the messages!
As far as Farfisa's, I think they're great! I used to own a Combo
Compact Deluxe and I should have never sold it! A few months ago, I
found a Combo Compact for sale in great working order with the volume
pedal. The Farfisa's were made to last and I don't see many of them
with lots of problems. The Vox organs, though generally more
versatile & more lush sounding (as Viktor said) usually come with
more problems than other combo organs I've seen around.
Check out Craigslist.com in New York. There are some organs listed
for some great prices, though I think some needed some work. Good
luck.
A question for the members: Surf music - a guitar, an attitude or a
shirt? (just kidding).
Hang 10!

Farisas:
I reccomend, if you are getting a farfisa, to get the red farfisa
compact. It was used on 96 tears and it's the unit that made the
definitive 'farfisa' sound, which is to say, one of the most god
awful organ sounds every if you ask a organ player. The Vox's are
gonna run you more esspecially if you're looking on ebay, and they
also don't have as many sounds as the Farfisa, but even though the
Vox doesn't do much it does what it needs to do damn well. I don't
know what your price range is for how much you want to spend, but i
know that Roland makes a V-combo that you can put an ultimate keys
expansion pack into it and get more than enough of the 'cheesy'
(please take no offence, becasue that's what the sound of those
organs are.) organ patches.
