UNSTEADY FREDDIE'S SURF-ROCK SHINDIG AT THE CORAL ROOM

Howlin Thurstons (howlinthurstons) - 25 Jun 2004 13:01:37

Some men spend their lives searching for the golden treasures of El Dorado or
the Lost Dutchman Mine or the fabled riches of Derriabar but not Unsteady
Freddie (www.reverbsuperb.com). He’s discovered a treasure house of coral on
the west side of Manhattan in a swanky little den of iniquity call The Coral
Room (512 west 29th Street, NYC phone 212 244 1965 www.coralroomnyc.com); a
spacious venue with an underwater motif complete with real live mermaids
swimming in the huge fish tank over the bar. (“Holy Crystal Springs, Batman!”
exclaimed the Boy Wonder).
A lively crowd was in attendance to soak up the twang provided by The Supertones
who had to perform for the entire night due to a last minute cancellation by 9th
Wave (get better soon, Mike). With over 85 songs in their repertoire Tim
(guitar, Farfisa organ and Fez), Simon (Bass Fiddle & 8-string electric bass),
Mike (guitar) and Presley (Drums) were just the guys for the job, drowning the
crowd in a tsunami of reverb, driving beats and the oddest collections of tunes
ever played by a surf-band.
Whether covering a 60’s pop tune (“Wendy”, “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’”),
or a theme from a long forgotten TV western (“Paladin”, “Rawhide”), or one of
the usual surf classics (“Apache”, “Out of Limits”), or their original material
(“The Last Ride”, Corkscrew”), this band had the house (or should I say reef)
rockin’ and the crowd dancin’. Even the mermaids were wet for this band.
The Supertones are a must see band, so keep a lookout for them, although you’re
most likely to catch them at the Yee Old Tipplen Inn, West 54th St. NYC. Drop
them and e-mail () for dates and times. Also, you can
pick up one of their fabulous CD’s Through Golly Gee Records at
Unsteady Freddie’s next Surf Shindig at the Coral Room will be Wednesday July
14th when he’ll present the Steamin’ Surf Trio, The Clams together with New
York’s No. 1 instrumental party band, Mr. Action And The Boss Guitars. Freddie
promises it will be a boss-a show that’s even better than submarine race
watching!

intense guitar drive and a sandpaper edge" --Phil Dirt, Reverb Central
