PA or NO PA ?

Unsteady Freddie (schizofredric) - 25 Jun 2004 05:46:39

Unsteady Freddie here
Thought I'd weigh in on this issue about using a PA
THE SUPERTONES were offered the opportunity to use the PA at the
CORAL ROOM at my SURF-ROCK SHINDIG June 23rd, but they chose not to;
well, almost.....
Apparently they felt their amps were good enough and loud enough
When they were first asked about the PA etc, the first response
was, "don't mike the drums, Presley's loud enough". I believe they
miked the amps for the 2 guitars and keyboards. Yet I think they
ended up playing without the PA pretty much the whole night. Though
at first I think they used it, ultimately they abandoned it.
THE CORAL ROOM is a pretty big space too. I went to the other end
of the room, and frankly, although the music was pretty crisp and
clean, it could have been a little louder? But what do I know, I
don't play....? Unless I am mistaken, the PA wasn't being used.
Someone can fill me in here -- should they have kicked up the volume
of their amps, or gone with the PA ?
There was a free-standing mike, which I occasionally used to make
my "unsteady" announcements, but they had to keep turning it on.
That suggests to me the PA in fact was NOT on most of the time.
I was running around so much, shmoozing and all, that I didn't pay
enough attention during the show so now in retrospect I am not sure
whether the PA was actually being used.
This is a great thread, b/c as I get more intimately involved
in "producing" surf-rock shows, I am learning "on the fly" what
needs to be done to make the sound crisp and clean and loud enough
for everyone to hear, while at the same time not blowing them out of
the room with too-high volume or "screechy" sound
Thanks everyone for weighing in on this -- very helpful and
educational to a neophite like me

Ask the Sharkskins about PA and they might come back with something
about Philly Pride.
Presley was loud enough.
The Green Jaguar was the loudest except when the bass player played
the gazillion-stringed bass. That bass was LOUD.
At times you couldn't hear the farfisa.
When the bassist played the stand-up, that could of been turned-up a
little. I prefered the acoustic thud over that other bass.
Underneath all this, the black strat guy strummed a lot and at times
could barely be heard.
If I had a preference, it would be a minimalist set-up w/o PA. With
just amps, it take on-stage interplay and communication to
constantly fine-tune the sound.
Just my opinion.
