Glenn Campbell was recently in the news regarding his arrest
and conviction for drunk driving. What was the name of the
studio surf band that Campbell played in, and what was their
biggest hit?
Are you referring to Sagittarius and "My World Fell Down?"

"Before becoming a household name, Campbell was earning
about $60 per session as a studio musician. He recorded
with everyone -- from Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra (who
mistook Campbell's star-struck glances for an unwanted
come-on), and the Beach Boys to Wayne Newton and Bobby
Darin. He was part of gun-slinging producer Phil Spector's
crack team of players, the Wrecking Crew. In 1963, he
played on 586 songs.
That level of productivity basically demanded that Campbell
do whatever was asked of him in the studio -- and he
couldn't even read music.
Under his own name, Campbell's recording career didn't
really win much attention initially. His first records on
Capitol -- 1963's Big Bluegrass Special and 1964's The
Astounding 12-String Guitar of Glen Campbell -- billed him
as a bluegrass act or as an instrumental guitar hot shot.
In the meantime, Campbell played on numerous Beach Boys
recordings, and he even took the part of "Brian Wilson,"
dressing up like him and singing and playing his part on a
1965 Beach Boys tour after Wilson had a nervous breakdown.
It wasn't until 1967 and "Gentle On My Mind" that Campbell
started to shine like a star in his own right."

He wrote one of my favorite titles for an instrumental:
"Cookout Freakout on Lookout Mountain"
on the Ventures "Guitar Freakout" album.

from Jan Berry's website
()
"A couple of weeks after making those first recordings with
Brian at Conway, Jan Berry was at Western Recorders on
Sunset Blvd., laying down tracks resulting from their first
creative collaborations. The original concept for "Surf
City" had been Brian's. And when he shared the song with
Jan, who was eager to finish it, the tune blossomed into
the ultimate California anthem. Jan and Brian clicked, each
getting something significant from the other. Brian's
melodies and harmonies were a perfect fit with Jan's own
musical ideas and technical expertise in the studio.
The West Coast music scene was hopping. Jan's steady
evolution had brought him to a point where he was ready to
kick things into high gear. And Brian's influence was just
the catalyst he needed. Having cut his teeth on arranging
and conducting, Jan was well at ease with the tight-knit
core of Hollywood studio musicians he was now hiring on a
regular basis. These included Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer,
Carol Kaye, Leon Russell, Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco,
Billy Strange, Ray Pohlman, and a great many others. Hal
Blaine called them the Wrecking Crew; and while Carol Kaye
doesn't remember any such designation, she agrees that it
was an enjoyable "clique" of special people. All famous in
their own right. All incredibly busy, playing more than a
few sessions each day, and making great money in the
process. These were veterans of many a hit recorda
tradition to be continued with Jan & Dean"

As DP pointed out, Glenn was a hotshot hired gun guitar player and played on
a ton of stuff, including stints with the Beach Boys. He also joined The
Champs early on in his career, but this was after they had already recorded
"Tequila".
I'd like to hear what Glenn has to say about 60's surf music. Him and Jim
Messina. I know everyone says Messina disavows that period in his life, but
is that urban legend or what? It's not on his website, but that doesn't say
a lot.

I floated this one out of my own interest. As was pointed out, he
played with the Beach Boys for 18 months until his solo career
took off; he was also in The Champs, a studio band, but after
they recorded 'Tequila' according to Brian. He was the guitar
player on Jack Nietsche's slow surf instrumental hit "The Lonely
Surfer." I am sure there are many others, too.
I think Glenn was on the Darts sessions.

I floated this out of my own interest and to see what people
would say: there is no single answer. From my reading, I got that
Glenn Campbell toured with the Beach Boys for 18 months
before his solo career took off, although I don't know if that
meant he was actually in the band or opening for them. He also
was a member of The Champs (as was pointed out, after they
recorded "Tequila.") He also played guitar on several "surf"
songs as a session musician, including Jack Nitsche's hit "The
Lonely Surfer."

He was in the wrecking crew. His album The Big bad
Rock Guitar of Glen Campbell features the lot, and
accordingly it sounds very similar to Billy Strange
albums of the period.
