I grew up in the 60's on the SoCal beaches.
We had never heard of what is now called
"Beach Music", meaning that mo-town stuff
that's played on the east coast on the
beaches of Lake Atlantic.
We partied on the beach just like Frankie
and Annette. The music was usually from
an AM radio. We would hear Beach Boys,
MoTown, Frank Sinatra, Lou Rawls, Ventures,
Percy Faith all on the same radio stations
(KRLA, KHJ, KFWB, XERB).
If we went to a dance concert that was billed
as "Surf Music" we would see Dick, Surfaris etc.
It was all pretty underground. Word of concerts
was spread, in large part, by posters. There was
no Ticketron, no 800 numbers, no online ordering,
to TV commercials about the shows. We'd go to our
favorite bulletin board at the HB pier or wherever,
and see who was playing at our favorite stomp
that weekend.
We tended to go to the same spots for concerts,
regardless of who was playing, as opposed to
"following" our favorite artist. We'd see,
for example, The Deltones one week, Petula
Clarke the next week, Canned Heat the next
week, Bobby Vinton the next week. It was
a lot less categorized than it is today.
Today I chuckle at the young kids that play
metal music. Is that NuMetal? Death Metal?
Goth Metal? Classic Metal? Edge Metal?
Punk Metal?
Back then it was "Music on Saturday Night".
Feeling geezerish...
