Beach Music

Craig Stang (killers_from_space) - 14 Jun 2004 21:39:54

I think of the Beach Boys, Rip Chords, and Jan &
Dean as beach music. The instro variety is surf music
to me. -Craig

Beach Music is a well established form of soul music. The Beach Boys and Jan and
Dean to the general population are surf music. We don't get to decide this one.
When we tell our casual acquaintances that we play surf music, we will forever
hear, "Oh, I love the Beach Boys" to which we have to explain that we play
INSTRUMENTAL surf music like Dick Dale. Then we hope that these acquaintances
have a clue who Dick Dale is.
Whether the general public is right or wrong about "surf music" and whatever
commercial machine made this general attitude happen is pointless to argue.
