OK,
If you're willing to shell $85 ($50 for labor and $35 for high-
quality NOS tubes), I can get your Fender '63 Reissue Reverb tank
where it should be. You must live in OC. It will take me a day to do
but when it's done you will notice the edge is smoothed out
considerably. Dario
These reverb mods are either an "emperors new clothes" thing or some of you have
extremely fine ears. Having done a blindfold comparison between two original '62
Fender Tanks and a reissue, the only difference I could detect was wider
frequency variations in the RI's tone settings, but the same tones could be
acheived between all three units as well. All three Tanks gave equal depth of
reverb, and equal "spitting" effect.

Marty,
I totally take that as an insult. I have done the work on my own
tank, it sounds better and I could offer the same help to others. To
ask $50 bucks to spend a Saturday or Sunday working on someone else's
amp to get it right when I could be out doing something else with my
time is pretty damn cheap. Find a tech that will do that for you AND
do the job RIGHT! If someone has their own NOS tubes that's fine with
me. For me to buy them retail from a reputable dealer costs about $11
a piece for the three tubes and shipping. How the hell am I shoving
gold in my pocket? I am not. See folks, you try to help otherpeople
in this world and you get the finger. I'm tired of this crap. D

Dario:
Marty had a different experience than you and he voiced it on this list. He
did not do so in an insulting manner.
Just because someone doesn't agree with you does not mean they are "giving
you the finger".
I heard a difference when I modded my tank. It was subtle, but I heard it.
However I believe Marty when he says *he* could not and I am not taking his
observation as an attack on my own personal way of life. :)
Life is too short for acrimony over a reverb tank mod for cripes sake.

Dario,
You need to chill dude, seems you have a chip on your shoulder.
All Marty was saying is he doesn't understand why it's necessary to
do the Mod to the tanks, because he couldn't tell the differnece
while comparing to other original tanks.
He made no mention of what you were doing, or what you were
charging.
I'm baffled by your response. seems the only middle finger given
was not by him. Tired of what Crap by the way???

No two ways about it, Fred,
Getting someone to look at an amp for 50 bucks is cheap. Taking an amp in when

Let's officially retire this thread, shall we?
To sum up: some people like to mod their tanks, other people think
it is unnecessary. There is no need to bait the opposing view on
this.
BN
I look at it as the same as Car mods...you know...I am not a very good mechanic,
so to have a new exhaust installed from the headers back, I'd take to some one
who knows...now there was nothing bad with the stock, but I will get better
preformance and sound from the Mod...
Point is, Its their money...if they want to mod it...don't critisize it...I
personaly suck so bad It wouldn't make since for me to have great gear...decent
will do fine...but if I ever get good, a 1200 dollar tube amp makes sense...I
don't screw with my swr redhead...she goes to someone who knows the amp...

I look at it the same way, Fred,
But we should not assume that all modifications to a car make the car
better than stock. I personally think that positive and negative
criticism of any modification to a car, toaster, reverb unit,
amplifier etc... is important for all of us to hear.

The word is tolerance. I dont suspect all new Fender
reverb units to sound the same, as I dont expect the
old ones to sound exactly the same. All the parts have
tolerances that may alter the resulting sound, in
this, that or even another direction. So discussing
whether a sound changes significantly with
modifications without having heard the PARTICULAR unit
is useless. After all the Fender people tried to make
a reverb that sounds like the sixties ones new (!)
from todays available parts.

I have to agree, KK,
The fact that my comparison of two early units vs a new RI unit resulted in
no audible difference doesn't prove that another old or new-modified tank
wouldn't have sounded different. The comparison did create a doubt in my
mind that the relatively slight variations in component tolerences would
result in significant differences in sound.
