the jag bridge mod question

Cordelia (jimdpie) - 11 Jun 2004 06:51:39

Can someone point me in the direction of instructions for modifying the
bridge of a Jaguar? You can substitute a Mustang bridge or some kind of
Gibson bridge? Is that correct?

Hi,
Gibson Bridge doesn't work very well, since it has a different string
radius.
Mustang bridge, or just the Mustang saddles instead of the Jaguar
saddles work fine.
However, you can file slots in the Jag Saddles, (like a mustang) and
highten the saddles afterwards. I did this and it allows me to higher or
lower the saddels individually but without the slipping strings. (gives
a better string angle from the tailpiece to the bridge, then usually
found whan Mustang saddles are installed.)
As a matter of fact I just found out that there is a huge difference in
sound between the MIJ/CIJ tailpiece and a Vintage tailpiece (I recently
bought a 62 tailpiece) and swapped it with my MIJ tailpiece on my Jag.
Really a different sound, strangly. (So, perhaps there is that vintage
vibe after all?)

AJ,
You've got options.
The quickest replacement for the stock Jag bridge is to purchase a stock
Mustang bridge and it will just drop right in. If you wanted to take it one
step further, you could order a modified Mustang Bridge from Warmoth
() which has the outermost saddles tapped with small
setscrews so you can adjust individual saddle heights. I have this bridge on
my '63 Jag and it's more novelty than anything else. I find the setscrews
stick out and shred the backside of your hand after a lot of playing, and if
theyre not set with a small dab of crazy glue, they'll back out on you.
Start with the stock mustang bridge replacement, and if you find you NEED
more height flexibility out of your outer saddles (which I doubt you will)
then order the Warmoth.

P.S. You can also just change the saddle barrels on your
existing bridge, since these are really the only difference
between the Mustang and the Jazzmaster/Jaguar bridge. I put
Graphtech's in my Jaguar, which worked great. A set of six is
about $30.

Gavin,
How do those Graphtecs work? What's your opinion? I've heard both
positive and negative feedback on them. I've heard they can be
string-cutters.

Dano,
They worked fine for me, but I play mostly lead so am not too
hard on strings. Actually, they are supposed to reduce friction on
the strings and prevent breakage...that's the hype, anyway. I
never broke a string. My only complaint was that they created
some sort of ground loop that forced me to use one of the
original metal saddles on the middle part of the bridge...they
also change the tone ever so slightly, making it a little less
bright. But, yeah, they seem fine to me. Better than the rattling
barrel screws used by Fender — a bad design that was one of
the few flaws of the original Jags and Jazzes, as you well know.
Gavin
P.S. Really love The Nebulas.

Hey Dano,
Do you have the original pups in your '63 jag, or have you replaced them?

The pickups in the Jag are the originals. The only thing that's been
replaced is the pickguard (it didn't have the original when I acquired it)
and I swapped out the stock bridge for the Warmoth tapped bridge.
The warmoth bridge is all sizzle and no steak if you know what I mean.
The taps are virtually useless, but it was an experiment to see how it
worked, and hell, a bridge made out of popsicle sticks is better than the
stock one.
