Re: "Fender Nazis"

Dana and Roberta Vincent (dana_l_vincent) - 06 May 2002 17:07:46

...I think it is just a way of expressing frustration and disgust with the
folks that think Fender instruments are the only guitars that should be
playing instrumental surf music. Personally I find it quite humorous, but
then I do have a somewhat warped sense of humor...!!! Yeah, I have seen a
couple of comments regarding Fender-supremacy in previous posts, but I took
it as more of what worked best for those particular individuals. I have
always found that the Fenders were easier to get the "surf" sound
right-out-of-the-box, but certainly any guitar with the correct combination
of effects and amplification is capable of a respectable tone. I can even
remember starting out playing in my first surf band (1963-era) with a
Jaguar-like Silvertone played through a bandmates no-name amp! Although I
thought it sounded pretty good then, if I heard it now, I would probably be
grossed-out! Still, put it through an outboard reverb and a Showman, who
knows?
Best regards, Dana Vincent

I don't know Dana, I've heard some great tones coming out of some
pretty strange amps (and guitars). A friend of mine has a collection
of old Dano amps, Canadian Electric, Kent, and assorted suitcase amps
that sound fantastic with the Reverb Tank. I have a Canadian made
Garnet combo amp (used by the Guess Who), that has a spring reverb
that will get so wet, it's ridiculous. Bet that old set up would've
sounded pretty cool today.
NonSURF...I just heard the Jon Spenser Blues Explosions new album,
and he uses a no name guitar with plastic cased pickups (I think),
and a Kustom head running a Vox cabinet...the sound is intense.

PS Any new Splashback recordings?
