Surf moment from the Barbecue and Blues Festival in OKC

ROYSWORLD99 - 06 Jun 2004 16:30:10

I was hanging out at the Bricktown Barbecue and Blues Festival in
downtown OKC this weekend. Lots of great blues bands (not a lot of
surf bands in Oklahoma)... Sat. afternoon, Otis Watkin's
() three piece group takes
the stage. He's a great guitarist, good blues/rock vocalist also.
Suddenly, in about the middle of his set, I hear treble picking down
the A string! Could it be? I dug the beer foam out of my ears, yes,
it is, Pipeline!! I am all excited, people look at me, an idiot they
are thinking... Otis played a great version and to top it of, the
drummer, Mike Newberry, does a drum solo in the middle. As good a
surf drum solo as I have heard. They followed Pipeline with Secret
Agent man. If Otis comes to your area, check him out. They made my
day.

Deja vu, parallel universe or whatever, I was at the Red Bank (NJ)
Jazz and Blues Festival this weekend, and the opening band opened up
with a hot-rodded medley of Pipeline & Penetration. I could hardly
believe my ears. The rest of their set was just blues, but it was
encouraging to hear the nod to the existence of surf music.
