Nobody knows what I mean by "surf".

Richard (errant_jedi) - 26 May 2004 10:30:41

I had my ad in the local indie paper for surf
musicians for a couple of weeks and was kind of
expecting to hear from at least one or two kids, but
wound up hearing from three different guys that were
all much older than me. This isn't a problem, except
for the fact that they're all likely going to be
pretty advanced compared to me in terms of
musicianship, but none of them quite knew what I was
trying to get at.
"I've always been a fan of beach music, like The Beach
Boys, Jan and Dean..."
"Well, not beach music, surf music..."
"Right. So who would be doing the vocals?"
"Well, when I say surf I mean instrumentals, there
wouldn't be any vocals."
"Uh, I see...Would you be getting into the British
Invasion?"
Nobody gets it. Everybody just seems to think I want
to start an oldies cover band, or an era band. Sigh.

Hang in there Richard...
At least you have surfguitar101...
by the way, where in the world are you?
good luck,
dp
ps: when you finally do locate your potential bandmates,
I'm sure they will totally know what "surf" is.

Dave, I'm located in Athens, GA, the land of bad,
pretentious indie/spazz/math rock. The #1 music town
in the nation according to Rolling Stone. Ha.

That's too bad Richard. Did you mention any song titles in your ad?
Maybe that would help clear things up. I would mention Pipeline,
Misirlou, Walk Don't Run, etc. as examples to get everyone on the
same page. The word "instrumental" should probably go in there
somewhere too. :)

Richard:
Dude...I am so sorry...I thought for sure Athens would have
at least one cool bass player, one guitarist who loves
reverberation, and at least one semi-cool drummer who knows
the "surf beat"...
Maybe you can meet cohorts at the next Dick Dale or
Slacktone gig?
Maybe you could hit up the B-52s and see if they know
anyone?
dude, I am so sorry... I am out in the Mojave Desert CA,
but, at least they seem to know who Dick Dale is out here.
keep trying...
good luck,

Dick Dale hasn't come back here in a few years. The
Reverend Horton Heat hasn't been back, as far as I
know Southern Culture on The Skids hasn't been
back...most of the bands that used to play around here
several years ago when I first started to get into
music around here that I really liked have all left.
The advice I usually get from them is, "Move."
Brian, I did use the word "instrumental" in the ad,
but it apparently wasn't enough. I think I'm going to
wait and try again in the fall when school picks back
up and see who comes back to town. I had wanted to
wait until school let out so I'd have some time, but
when school lets out lots of people also leave town.
I guess I'll keep trying.
Right now I'm starting to make calls about getting The
Phantom Creeps and The Crimson Ghosts booked down
here. It'd be the first surf this place has seen a
while.

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 26 May 2004 18:42:24

Hey Richard,
People in the netherlands of surf music (such as Colorado)
respond well when you say "Instrumental rock." Since the
category is nearly as restricted as "Surf," most people get on the
page quick...mention of Link Wray, Dick Dale, The Ventures, etc.
gets them clued in fast, and nobody will mention Jan & Dean or
the Beach Boys. Hopefully, they won't bring up "Popcorn," tho.
Instrumental rock, my friend.
Remember, the great surf band The Penetrators came from that
part of the world...you'll find players. I found my band members
hanging out at the clubs and letting everyone know, in precise
terms, what I had in mind for a surf/punk/garage band. It was
more fruitful to do it that way, here, than to run an ad.

Or the Treble Spankers version?

Wow, The Surf Coasters covered "Popcorn?" How cooooollll! I
would love to hear that! The original, I recall, had a lot of smaltzy
proto-electronic effects, but it was catchy.
What album did the Surf Coasters release it on? I still envy all of
you who got to see them during their California sweep.

It's on Happy Easter, along with a hypnotic five-minute cover of the
James Bond theme and a jaw-droppingly powerful version of the
Chantays' "Tragic Wind."
It's also (IMHO) their weakest full-length album--with one or two
exceptions, the originals just don't live up to their high standard.

Mr L. (c_e_l_t_i_c_g_o_t_h) - 30 May 2004 03:54:02

No worries bro,
most people dont know what surf music is. I guess its
kind of a thing that they have to discover for themselves to
understand. I've traveled all over the US and I've rarley come across
people that know what Im talking about.
Person: "oh, you're in a band? what kinda music do you guys play?"
Me: "We Play Surf."
Person: "Surf? whats that?"
then I go into an explanation that usualy ends up with pulp fiction in
it with miserlou as an example. the people we've played for so far
usually have no clue what style we play but they enjoy it so to me,
thats all that counts. wish I could use a better movie example than
Pulp Fiction, if any readers have one lemme know so I can get it.

This rings a bell with me.
Down here in Cape Town South Africa your jaw hits the floor if anyone
has a clue when you say 'surf music', 'surf-rock', 'surf instrumental'
or anything else we might call ourselves.
For the old folks, I saw 'you know the shadows? It's a lot like
that.' for the rest i say 'you know the intro song from pulp fiction?
That sorta thing'... If neither of those works it's a half hour
conversation: "Surf music began in the bright Californian sunshine in
the early 60's. Those were heady days...blah blah, yakkedy yak.' a
waste of time.
try: Shadows, Ventures, Dick Dale (that intro song from pulp fiction).

DP (noetical1) - 01 Jun 2004 10:17:11

I always like to describe it as "hard-core reverberated
electric music"...that one always cracks me up...then they
are 10 times more confused than when the conversation
started...and that's a good place to be.
good luck
