Mysterious Reverb / How I learned about Surf

Damon (dei77) - 26 Apr 2002 15:16:58

Whats Up Fellow Surf Bros!
I have to be honest with you guys. This isn't the "best" outboard reverb unit
on the planet. But it was $50 dollars not $800 like an old fender unit. Its
better for me because I can't afford to buy an $800 dollar effect (reverb is
just an effect - right?). I had a re-issue reverb unit for a few years and
spent more money on repairs than I payed for it! I was young and didn't know
what I was buying. I have been told buy musicians I trust . . . though I've
never been able to find one . . . that the best (i.e. reliable and affordable)
reverb unit for me would be a later model (non-collectable) Fender reverb unit.
When I began playing surf music in San Clemente (Best waves in southern CA -surf
city to those of you who don't live in CA), I bought all my gear at a music
store in town that just happened to have all the gear left over from the
Tornados reunion tour. I was 17 and didn't even know who they were - I learned
about surf music from the guy who ran the local indy record store in town. I
told him I liked punk rock and Dick Dale and he said "Check out the Satan's
Piligrims. If you don't like them . . . you probably don't like surf music."
He was right. When I came back the next day to buy all their albums he said "At
Home With . . . " was their only album. He turned me on to all the Estrus bands
that were doing surf at the time. We listened to a whole bunch of albums and I
found that Man . . . Or Astroman was my favorite. I still love Satan's Pilgrims
and was crushed to hear that they broke up recently (I saw them every chance I
got when they were together).
Sorry I haven't been writing as often as usual anbspcan no longer afford a cable
connection. Lost another job for the same reason as always. Music will always
be #1 no matter how good the job is.
